  1. He's still had a decent career, scoring well over 200 goals mostly at a decent level.
I think Messi and Ronaldo warped people's perception of that. 200 goals is 20 per season for ten years. That's a pretty decent return for any striker at any level.
He hasn't hit double figures for almost five years as you say but probably will this season, at a good level, and finish with about 40 appearances most likely.
We could do a lot worse if there's a couple of injuries. Also if he's playing and scoring next season when October comes round he'd be worth a look.
Natural goalscorer and they're not to be sniffed at, especially for a team that has always struggled to score goals. I thought he could have been given more of a chance when he was younger too. Decent option to have for one more campaign potentially.
Also if a club like Aberdeen could get him sharp and fit he'd score bucketloads up here. Hibs, Hearts, Dundee Utd should all have a wee eye on his contract situation.

I read recently that another English Championship club(can’t recall who)were planning to make a move for him in the summer.
Highly unlikely anyone up here outwith the Old Firm could afford his wages.
As much as I was a fan of Strachan, I felt one major mistake he made was to ignore Rhodes, finally gave him a chance against Gibraltar and then criticised his one miss during that game.
Don’t think he’s been in a squad since.
  2. Not a striker 'coming through' but I think Jordan Rhodes has 5 goals in last 6 games.
Given there is definitely a striker position available in the Euro squad, it wouldn't be the most horrific shout. Its likely to be one of Shankland/Nisbet/Paterson/Griffiths  however if Rhodes was to continue to bang in the goals, I wouldn't be adverse to see him included. Very much a form player and when on form, knows where the goal is.

A while ago I’d have been dead against it but with Griffiths all but written off and Dykes looking short of fitness I wouldn’t be against Rhodes making a comeback if he keeps us his scoring form till the end of the season.
  3. I think as far as midfield pecking order is concerned McLean is ahead of Fleck so I’d expect that if Gilmour makes it then it would be at the expense of Fleck which I’d be ok with. If Turnbull continues his form McLean should be concerned about his slot.

  4. Have we ever had a player good enough that they were approached to represent a higher-rated nation?

You occasionally hear about countries who'd have been able to put together the backbone of a decent side if their best players hadn't been nicked by other (usually European) nations.

England wanted Oli Burke before we capped him.
  5. and doesn't seem to have played a first team game since 2018! that can't be right. no idea what his form, fitness or frame of mind is but at 32, hopefully got something left in the tank. Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts etc would be a good move I reckon if he still has the drive....

Lampard binned him pretty early on after he took over and when he was (rarely)fit seemed to play for the U23’s.
He was on a decent wedge and I’m sure there was an appearance trigger in his contract as well which probably didn’t help his cause.
  6. Well here it is lads, the educated squad selection, assuming everyone is fit except McKenna.
    Marshall, Kelly, Gordon
Palmer, O'Donnell, Robertson, Tierney, Cooper, Hanley, Gallagher, FIndlay
McTominay, McGinn, McGregor, Gilmour, Fleck, Armstrong, Christie, Forrest, Fraser
    McBurnie, Griffiths, Naismith

Can’t disagree with much of that although I’d have McLaughlin in for Gordon.
  7. Dropped the ssc a message and got the "this will be communicated nearer the time" response. Norway allocation is 1350 apparently so hopefully serbia give us a few thousand. I'm on 12 points so could struggle for Norway ticket.

Serbia will be minimum 2750 which is a hell of a lot better than Norway.
  8. If and a massive if scotland scrape past Israel and end up in Norway.....the score will be 1 of scotlands most humiliating in history and you have lots....hoping they get job done against Israel so I can watch the utter drubbing incoming in the play off final, popcorn will be at the ready.
Scotland hosts euro finals and can't play a game hahahahha pleasing

Far be it from me to politely suggest where you spend your online screen time but surely there are forums or even sub forums on P&B for people like you?
  9. Declan Gallagher put in passable performances against two very poor teams - that does not mean that he has made the position his own. You'd be as well saying that Stuart Findlay should start alongside him because he played well against San Marino.

Why, because they’re two completely different things?
  10. Yeah but there's no room for sentiment.

Hanley has spent his entire career at a higher level than Gallagher has ever played at.  He is captain of a Premiership club and right now playing every week.

I think some Scotland fans probably have a bad memory of him as he was struggling a lot when he played regularly a few years ago. But he was a young guy playing in a team that was a bit of a shambles.

He is really quite experienced and still not that old, has spent his career flitting between Championship and Premiership level, having at least three separate stints in the Premiership.

At that level he is stretched a bit but that's no slight its the top level of the game, and he does okay.  We don't have any other CB's with any experience at that level and only two (Cooper and McKenna) who potentially will in the near future.

At Championship level Hanley has shown repeatedly he excels.

He is a much better player now than the raw kid who was a bit all over the place at times for Scotland in the past, much wiser, smarter, more experienced and more measured.

He is a big, strong, aggressive type who is fairly mobile for a big lad, loves a tackle, loves defending a natural defender, and is surpisingly decent technically. He is aggressive and has a good attitude, a good professional who has always shown a good attitude to playing for Scotland.

Norwich are obviously going down which will actually suit him, as a year in the Championship where he can play loads of games and do well will be good for him, so he should be going into a good spell where he will play the best football of his life the next few years.

His experience would help a young player next to him too, and I like the balance of him and McKenna.  They compliment each other well and both like to defend.

I think if both stay fit and Hanley can play a few more games for Norwich they will be the best two available for these games and maybe the two to hang our hat on for a wee while.

Gallagher has done well and is a good solid option but Hanley is comfortably ahead of him for me.

I’d hardly say it’s sentiment to select someone who did well in his last two games, for those performances alone I’d say the right sided CB slot should be Gallagher’s until he does something that suggests otherwise.

I always thought Hanley was made a bit of a scapegoat for some poor team performances and at times I felt Martin was more at fault.

I haven’t watched much of Hanley for the last couple of seasons and he’d probably have had a couple more caps if he hadn’t pulled out the last few squads with injury.

  11. Caulker would be worth a look but for the next campaign.
For these games coming up I'm now leaning towards Hanley and McKenna at the back, as long as Hanley keeps getting regular game time at Norwich.
I think they're the best we have available right now, and they're not shite they're half decent.

Hanley must be in Clarke’s thoughts and he’s playing at a high level but it’d be pretty harsh on Gallagher after his decent display in the last double header.
  12. That's a bit of a stretch.  How far are you going back to get a Naismith that performed like that?

As far back as our last two internationals.
Naismith was excellent in the last double header, showed more in those two games than McBurnie ever has and that was whilst being about 70% fit. His influence on the rest of the team was crucial as was his link up with McGinn.
He also looked as if he wanted to be there unlike McBurnie.
