  1. Got a pair of running shoes today. Was wondering though, how much is a good distance for someone who hasn't done any exercise for about 5 years to start off with? I'm not fat but I'm definitely unfit. I had to sprint about 200 yards for a train a few weeks ago and I almost spewed.

I was in the same position when I started in Feb this year, I could barely run the length of myself. I used an iPhone app called Couch to 10k - Website. The website has the programme on it, so you don't need the app. Once I'd done this I moved onto another program.. I ran my first two 10ks in Sept and Oct in (just!) under an hour, so it def works.

  2. Oh, and well done to all who done the Edinburgh 10K this morning - that's a tricky, hilly course, not helped by the bottlenecks at the tight corners.

Cheers Gaz. It does get ridiculously tight at some points, esp at the Commie Pool exit of the park.

  3. Right lads, I want to get into running cos I'm getting fat. Can anyone recommend some decent shoes for it that aren't that expensive?

Get yourself up to Run4It on Lothian Road, give them your budget and get them properly fitted, they're pretty good with beginners. I knackered my knees when I tried to take up running in a badly-fitted pair of trainers last year.

  4. Yup. That record is why it annoys me a little bit that people are saying "this is the most I've enjoyed the football in years". The two years we were 7th we had a brilliant team and some brilliant results, both home and away. The season we avoided relegation at Inverness was my favourite as a Falkirk supporter, there were some cracking games, two cup runs and obviously a rollercoaster ride over the year. The last two seasons have obviously been shite but when I see comments on OneF saying "this is the best the football's been since our first year in the SPL" I can't get my head round it.

Before people call me a c**t I would just like to say that I am enjoying the games more now than I have in either of the previous two seasons, and I think the effort and desire shown by the players in recent weeks has been great to see.

Our first season in the SPL was dreadful. How long did it take us to win a home game?? The season after, with Stokes in the side and us horsing the Fifers at every turn, was fantastic though.

  5. Can't say I've ever seen him play before, but another body in will certainly help us, although I don't think anyone in the side right now deserves to be dropped.

Whilst I agree with that, we are relying on three youth players and a guy who is booking-prone. With Weatherston and Hutton, we could rotate the midfield a bit more. We can't play Sibbald and Fulton every week!

  6. 1:30:31 going by my Garmin watch. Well chuffed with my time considering my training got aborted four weeks ago after doing in my ankle ligaments. Started much faster than intended but managed to maintain it, must have been the race environment that pushed me on.

Really enjoyed the atmosphere and race, reckon it will be the first of many distance races, I've got the bug. My number (and therefore my chip thingy) fell off early on, but I managed to stuff it in my pocket, I assume I'll still get my time in the paper/online (wherever it goes)?

If anyone saw a flash of black and white flying by them it would've been me in my Queen's top. ;)

It's online aleady - go to the website...

  7. No need to be embarrassed. I managed the half marathon in 1 hour 55 mins. That's 10 mins quicker than my previous half. How hot was it though? The homemade water station and hose on Pollockshaws Road was fantastic.

How did everyone else get on?

Good effort! The weather warmed up a lot towards the end of 10k, which was much cooler.

59 mins 13 secs for the 10k - very pleased to get in under the hour (and just quicker than the winner of the half marathon!).

Given I couldn't run more than a minute at a time when I started "training" in February, I'm pretty happy - my main aim was just to run the full length. Same again in Edinburgh and then aim for 50 minutes next year.

  8. Difficult to judge things on the basis of a friendly but a decent game. Hibs much poorer than expected in the first half, with Falkirk deserving the 1-0 lead. Our defence looked comfortable and decent movement up front. Second half, and the changes showed how thin our squad is, with both 1st choice centre-backs being off. Draw probably about right in the proverbial game of two halves.

Rhys Bennett easily our stand-out player, although I thought Miller, Duffie, Dods and Kingsley all had good games (good to see more of Kingsley than a two-footed lunge!). Not sure about the new forward, he had some good clearing headers at set-pieces but that's about it.

Oh, and the keeper looked good.

  9. Would not be at all surprised to see Finnigan do ok with St Johnstone and get a few goals, interesting to see what another coaching team gets from him. Although occasionally effective getting opponents sent off... he needs to cut out some of the negative side of his game

If St Johnstone have a successful season and he sticks around, don't forget he's suspended in Europe... ;)

Ha, I'd forgotten about that. Remind me of the barking mad lineup we played in Vaduz?

Patch on the Ochils, it's not a patch on the Ochils...
