The only silver lining I can find, is that fortunately we have just the one player contracted for next season. I'm just waiting for the club to announce what financial help they require from the fans and how that is to be co-ordinated. I've already budgeted for what I would spend on the eight remaining league games, so as far as I'm concerned they can have every penny of that right now.
On the Falkirk thread there's some discussion about which of their ex players has/had gone furthest in European club competition. It crossed my mind that 3 of the Lisbon Lions played for us at various times, Willie Wallace, Bertie Auld and Stevie Chalmers. Charlie Gallagher had played in the Quarter Final and I think both he and John Cushley were in the party that travelled. You can add in Sean Fallon as well, who later managed us.
The scoreline was hugely flattering to us. Montrose were in complete control after going ahead, so much so that I think our first shot on target was around the 89th minute. Montrose were fitter, faster and superior in every aspect of the game. Disappointing performance to say the least.
I think we have to temper our expectations for Wardrop, at least in the short term. Definitely had a bit of "ring rust" last Saturday, which is perfectly understandable. Are the couple of loan deals that Duffy mentioned were dependent on injuries clearing at the parent clubs, now in the bin?
Does this suggest that Quitongo will be used as a wide player? If Layne is back in 3 weeks or so, where does that leave him? Why have we retained Tierney? So many questions...
I have a feeling he played against us at least once as a wide player for Morton. It would be very disappointing if Tierney is trundling around as a lone striker again on Saturday.
His talking head pieces to camera, with his eye glances to one side and then the other, are full-on Katie Hopkins. "Oh my goodness, pater! What a delightful frisson I'm experiencing, rubbing shoulders with these 100% authentic common people."
Fantastic goal-saving clearance apart, I thought he looked exactly how you would expect someone to look, who hasn't played football (apart from a couple of hours in reserve games) in over a year. His touch and decision making were a wee bit off at times. I'm sure he'll improve once he's had a few more games, as it's unrealistic to expect him to be close to the level he was at previously.
