Alnwick should be back, assuming he is healthy/recovered/symptomless. But we are still wobbling away on the 'four first-team-defenders' tightrope.

I think if you polled all Saints supporters about the line-up now, the average response would roughly be 4-2-3-1, and, defence aside, we've got players who naturally fit in all those positions. So, no more players out of position. No more 3-5-2 or 4-3-3- or even 4-4-2. Durmus and McAllister aren't performing, so should be dropped. Straight shootout between Erwin and Obika to play up top; I'd go Erwin. Connolly, McGrath and MacPherson in behind. Ethan and Foley at the base of midfield.

See, this all feels fairly straightforward to me. I'm not sure why we seem to be making things so complicated for ourselves.

I keep seeing Cammy mentioned wide right of a 3, but just don’t see it myself. I’ve never known him to play there (has he?), always been central or right back but even at right back he just doesn’t look as comfortable. If it’s not his position, then it kinda defeats the ‘natural position’ argument.

I’d have him and Foley as the ‘two’, with Ethan providing back up. Ethan has done well, but Cammy is just a bit more dynamic than him.

Killie Saturday then Aberdeen away finding it hard to see us getting any points from any of these two games.  I take it the new left back mentioned is a no go ?  We also have a young man in goals with no first team experience.  It's all going tits up very early.  Still feel there is a decent team there if all were available.  Goodwin needs to stand up and correct his wrongs also soon.

Why you saying a young man in goal, DZ? Our other two keepers are out of isolation.

We are losing games via the midfield. Jim plays two wingers who are just not in the game leaving Foley and Erhahon having to do all the work, not being able to support the strikers and generally being overrun. Two wingers isn't working. We should play through the middle in a passing game and support the striker(s) more by also being able to get more men in the box. McAllister, nor Morias,  simply aren't good enough for a starting slot. My rant last night showed a team and formation that I think we should adopt. But if Jim continues to play only two in the middle of the park coving the defence all the way up to the strikers then we have no chance of winning games.

Agree with this, we’re losing games as our opponents are dominating space and we aren’t good enough to play 4-4-2.

We’ve got to get players playing in their correct position,  such as a number 10 in McGrath who can offer us so much more.

When's our next game? I think we'll sign someone. While losing Tait isn't as bad as losing Shaughnessy, surely we can't attempt to keep muddling through like this.
Also, when can Alnwick come back? Assuming he's symptomless and fit, of course.

    Answer to both next Saturday.

Unless they’ve been playing, big risk to drop a left back in with little minutes in their legs. Unless JB has been up training and playing bounce games?

I just keep wondering what it must be like for the players in training? How do you get any sort of continuity in shape when he is constantly changing it.

Yeah, especially given the short turnaround from the Celtic game. You’d think the same shape, just playing higher up the park, was the right approach. It’s not happening for Kyle at the moment, so shouldn’t be starting.

Nah we’ll put Foley there and destroy the midfield.

I don’t know what Jim is thinking but his tombola  tactics and constant changing of shape and line ups is killing us. FFS Jim, pick one.

Was just about to ask that. Is Jim changing players and tactics too much? Don’t see why the 11 from Wednesday had to change. Is he trying too hard?

    My two cents...

1¢ we at least have a stable back four available to us which will settle the team down and allow Foley to return to midfield.

2¢ Connolly surely has to start here. The best chance we have of getting a goal is from a break away when Celtic push high, and he looks like he's always aiming to be in space and ready to make a run.

Agreed, got a feeling that Connolly and Morias or Durmus will be wide with Erwin up top. We need pace on the wings to get us up the park and support the front player.

    A good, solid player.

Although, I get the feeling, that in amongst the euphoria of surviving the play off, he was elevated to a better player than he actually was.

This. Would have happily taken him back, but his form dropped quite significantly when we hit the playoffs.

He did for us in the top league what Stelios did for us in the Championship - passionate player that lifted those around him and connected with fans.

McPherson is not just better he is massively better than Sheron. As for yesterday's performance I'm putting that down to the massive disruption 24 hours before the game. It should not have gone ahead.

It’s interesting that Cammy started the season when we hit some ‘form’. Out the team and, well, we’re out of form.

He’s not the be all and end all, but definitely our best set piece taker and I’d have him, Foley and Ethan as the three on Wednesday.

Your team literally voted your team out of relegation/playoff danger and voted other teams into leagues you knew might not even play during an economic crisis, knowing the job losses and potentially worse that would result, then refused to even consider reconstruction. You then double down on it posting shite on social media like #heartbreaker during a fucking pandemic people are actually dying in. Meanwhile you had the fucking brass neck to take 50 grand from a donor who is a Hearts fan and was introduced to Doncaster by Hearts and then ask if you can borrow our goalie.

Do you not maybe think you'll get some comeback for that?

    Cretin.

I watched the whole game on Sunday Rick . We can posses the ball fine but going forward we looked devoid of any ideas in that game. Mcalister out wide is not working he should be brought in more central.  Was it just me McAllister displeased at being subbed  ?  Reading "not the old firm " goodwin saying he is talking to three players in Southern Ireland. Rough diamonds was Goodwin's description.

Goodwin said that McAllister was playing behind the strikers in the hole on Saturday...so if he was out wide it was maybe why he was subbed!

Yup, Tait has been superb, but I'd fear for us if he got injured (or sent off). We really don't have cover for that LB spot. I said previously maybe Fraser can play the other side of the fullback, as we have quite a bit of cover for RB so maybe that's on Goodwin's mind.

The way Tait has been playing, I'd have no issues with him retaining that spot consistently for the remainder of this contract (2 years thankfully). He's only 30, but I don't think it would be a daft idea to identify a player that could be his future replacement now. I've no idea what sort of mentor he would be, although didn't he wear the Motherwell armband in the past?, so you'd hope we could pick up someone with potential (or promote from within) and develop them rather than going out and finding the finished article.

Yeah, agree with this. The way we play, we don’t really do the overlapping fullback thing so it’s not like he’s busting up and down the wing for 90 mins. Don’t see him being an issue for the next two seasons, but would be good to invest in the future and either promote within or take a punt on a younger, lower league player.

Was disappointing when we went down to ten men. You have to step up a gear. Get the ball fellow players have to work hard by moving into space . You have to keep the ball and work it. At least that what I was taught playing the game. Not kicking it into no man's land for the opposition to gain possession.  Keep thinking we have something special going on only to be disappointed.  Early days still work needed to get into the top six. Fingers crossed buds.

Disagree, if it’s not for a double deflection we walk away with a 1-0 win and praise for game management.

the two banks of four were tight and didn’t give them much to play with. It have been good to maybe take Junior off and add a wide player in, but we didn’t have that luxury on the bench.

Haha! ‘A little bit’ is probably pushing it there...

Vaguely remember him coming off the bench at a home game (Celtic?) but never really seen again. Strange signing.
