Neither would've made it over the threshold, by God!  :P

Are you sure about that, Dave? Wikipedia implies otherwise.

Although his large size was undoubtedly part of his comedic appeal, Arbuckle was self-conscious about his weight and refused to use it to get "cheap" laughs like getting stuck in a doorway or chair.

I only made two minutes. I got pst the "climate reasearchers make it up for grants" guy buy the "one world government" guy was too much.

It's unfair to say it was just boomers. One guy looked like he might be in his mid fifties.

    Here's a review

That is an excellent and comprehensive rebuttal. Leads no room whatsoever for any doubt, and links to detailed debunking on every single point.

It's almost as though the scientific approach is to be evidence-based.

(The canard that someone with expertise in a field can speak with authority in an unrelated field is not new. Indeed, it's one of the standard fallacies that are taught when beginning to study things like logic and philosophy: it's the fallacy known as "argument from authority".)

Just seen Joey doing his own version of misspelled footballers. It wouldn't make the gold forum for me but can anyone tell me why Harry Kane appears to be singled out as a woke footballer?

Any dots before the @ in an email address are completely superfluous.

I.e. if my email was hedge.cutter@gmail.com then I'd still receive an email even if somebody accidentally sent it to hedgecutter@gmail.com

This is not true, but the example will work, because of the specific domain.

Gmail addresses work that way and are also case-insensitive; but neither of those is required by the relevant RFCs.

(In practice, dots aren't generally irrelevant; case isn't generally relevant.)

Why am I the only person to recognise Tom Stoltman in their top 10? Not a gripe just curious.

Crowned the World's strongest man two years running and Britain's strongest man for 3 years running.

That's got to count for something?

I've no intention of being judgemental on this, but the levels of anabolic steroids and other PEDs that someone has to take to become even close to competitive in WSM are absolutely staggering, and require great care (and probably a degree of luck) to avoid severe health problems. Even at cycle dosages that could never lead to that level of strongman competition, rates of complications and fatalities are very sobering, and dangerous usage (levels and management) goes down much further than anything not involved in strength sports would imagine.

When I was a junior, someone from my athletics club with a background in strength training died in his late 20s, with causes that indicated steroid usage. He was ranked around 20th in Scotland. He wouldn't have been the highest-ranked steroid user in that list, to put it mildly.

It's simply impossible to compete in WSM without quite dangerous levels of PEDs. It's still a great sporting achievement, requiring tremendous dedication; but I wouldn't be quick to admire it from a health/role model perspective.

Maybe others feel the same way, and that's why Tom isn't getting more love in this thread.

I could cite other specific cases and historic data in support of this, but I am definitely not trying to make the case that people taking PEDs are "bad"; I'm simply recording the facts that WSM required very high PED usage, and that such usage is dangerous.

Last week, I was at an international competition for athletes of a certain age*. That included throwers from the 70s and 80s, and there was some discussion of maximum "natty" strength levels. The consensus from people who have been there is that WSM starts a couple of strata above where natty ends.

But that in no way undermines the efforts and dedication that are required on top of the PEDs. It's still a tremendous achievement.

    * Where I was a team mate of Dwain Chambers - whose levels when he was banned for PEDs would have been at least an order of magnitude below WSM competitors.

  6. It's easy to take things out of context, and infer that Barton has an enormous ego but is a terrible judge of footballing ability.

Why, just a few years ago I recall him implying that he would do well on moving to Rangers, and that his career in Scotland wouldn't consist of repeated failure and humiliation, as well as complete submission to Scott Brown.

Last year I found a PG Wodehouse short story I hadn't read before.

Like immersing yourself in the most enjoyable world there is.

Re-readingThe Clicking of Cuthbert and Honeysuckle Cottage (and most others from Mr Mulliner and The Oldest Member) would fit the brief, for me.

Multiple Martin Kemp posters across our town have been targeted by yobs attaching “googly eyes” which is causing fury to locals.  Lytham lookalike to Taylor Swift - Serena, who is an avid music lover and huge Martin Kemp fan said “This really isn’t fair or funny. Martin Kemp is a huge heartthrob which everyone woman wants to see and every man wants to be, this is the act of a jealous man.”.   Seething Serena added “I will be front row for Martin Kemp when he comes to The Lowther Pavilion Theatre & Gardens on the 1st of November.”

Hope Martin keeps an eye out for her.

    Mac n' Cheese

There have been multiple occasions whereby I've actually fancied it off the menu, but not ordered it because of the M n' C wording.  Yes, I'm that petty.  Petty, but principled.

First time I heard of (and rejected) a mac and cheese was just under a year ago. I thought it was a cheeseburger. Since then, I've rejected it several times on the basis of it having the wrong name.

Cheers for that. I've been using that line ever since I opened the front door in my dressing gown. An unusual place to have a front door right enough.

That reminds me of the time I shocked my postman by coming to the door naked. He was surprised I knew where he lived.

Having been in the workplace for over 20 years now, all within Global organisations, there has been a big shift from companies outwardly trying to keep employees happy to almost the opposite.
There has also been a shift to personal brand being more important than the actual job. I had a 1-2-1 recently where the main focus was put on the fact my profile in the in-house social media was blank than any performance.
A job for life is very rare as well so people are less bothered about holding on to one. Terms are less agreeable.
When I started my first job I had a final salary pension, a 10% yearly bonus and a share purchase scheme. These kind of terms would make you job conscious. Within 10 years, they closed the final salary pension due to costs, they didn’t do the same to the German employees as it would be illegal there.
I started a new job over a year ago and the additional terms are pretty good but almost standard, health insurance, dental insurance etc along with a joint contribution pension. But all of the jobs I applied for at the time had much the same.

There have been societal changes as well, previously people would seek help from their parish or from family, community etc for personal problems. Most of these things don’t exist any more so they expect their workplace to give support.

In a short space of time at my last job, I had two people contact me out of hours to say they were suicidal, I had to facilitate counselling through the company. I couldn’t understand why they didn’t go to their family but some folk don’t have the option.

It is easy to blame it on folk being shut-in nerds or socially awkward but there is very little incentive to be job conscious any more.

    Tl;dr

    Lisa needs braces.
