That's me thinking optimistically as well!

I don’t think you’ll have too many arguing with you.  The signings so far have been mixed at best (even if we’re kind and saying Lamie, Telfer and Flapjack are bench players).   There’s no question the squad is weaker than the one that struggled so badly last year.

The new Jake Xerxes Fussell will definitely be up there as one of the best, if not the best, of the year. Outstanding.

Sounds a lot to my ear like Bill Callahan/Smog.  Which is a good thing.

Let’s face it, we’re the Championship squad looking to stay in the big league.

I got downvoted for saying this, but there were two keepers on the bench yesterday. There’s no 10, 11 or 14 in the squad.  I think there are probably an other two or three creative players still to come in.   Too early to judge.

You can see Cowie’s thinking though, a solid 3, two bombing on wing backs, another solid 3 and two up top.  It’s the midfield three, still, that’s currently woefully short.

Argentina v France has certainly been an interesting game

Probably fair to say France are being particularly French these days?

Liking the look of this team , hopefully get the job done with minimal fuss, hopefully Macleod shows up well being given a start

edited to add, it will be interesting to see who's captain given no Randall or Laidlaw, White or Leak would be my guess

I don’t know. That team is bereft of any creativity whatsoever.  0-0 seems like a good bet.   Edit:  two keepers on the bench.  That squad is far from finished.

  6. He didn’t iron out that tucking in/not looking thing.  He still doesn’t look at the ball landing.    The English coaches tried to - I remember the commentators on Sky saying it was something he had to change - and it cost him about a year and lead to a stress fracture.

He’s unquestionably England’s greatest ever bowler and undoubtedly in the very top tier of all-time greats.   The rest is just conjecture.

For many of us on Pie and Bovril, I’d suggest, he’ll be the last top level sportsperson of our age.

edit: Even at 42, he’s one of the best fielders in international cricket - ignoring the C&B dolly.   A bit of a freak in that sense.

Gus Atkinson looks very very good on first look, if exceptionally posh.

Jimmeh drops an absolute dolly c&b for what would have been a wicket with his final ball in Test cricket 😂

Should have gone bowling from both ends at this point.

  8. West Indies showing absolutely no intention of taking this to another day by giving Jimmy his send off before play today.  A few misty eyes, and classy by the West Indies but really, they couldn’t have waited until lunch?

I know numbers mean nothing, however no number 10/11 would suggest a couple of attacking players to come in....?

ETA - on the note of 'player appointments', surely Randall is the only contender for Captain?

I’m reminded that they played all of last season with no number 9 in the squad, and 10 could easily be Jordan White.  But there is really no alternative number 11 - or 14 even.

I’m inclined to read a lot into numbers.  I’m surprised Telfer is 21… perhaps a suggestion that he’s not going to be a regular?

edit: being captain is really an off the pitch thing, but it does have to be someone who will play most games.  Laidlaw or Leak would both be ahead of Randall for me.

Also Loturi being 7 is interesting.  I’d imagine he’ll be looking to move onwards and upwards in a year’s time - it’d be good to see the club trying to promote him as a “face of the franchise” a bit more.

I'd really like to have it confirmed that MacLeod, Smith, Ewan & Williamson will all play active parts in the 1st team squad.

We're in an era where we can name 9 substitutes & field 5 of them every match.

I'd like to see/ensure that they're all signed up for the next 3 or 4 years too.

You’d like to think so.  History tells us otherwise.

In other news, looking at the Clach action shots, Brophy looks in significantly better shape than last season.  I’d like to think he’d be motivated this year - if for no other reason than to get himself a move.

Sims had all the ability but I always got the feeling he "couldn't be arsed"

Spoke to him in the past, and he made his money in his Southampton days. Only plays now for himself. Tody player but he's never going to break his neck to do anything for us.

Murray was never going to Hibs, his choice has always been Dundee. He's a Dundee fan and I expect he'll wind up working for the club once he stops playing. The 3 year deal realistically ties him down for the rest of his playing career.

That’s about as far removed from Josh Sims as it’s possible to get.

Atkinson and Woakes get the nod to play with Anderson for his last Test, they’ve gone for a spinner too. Potts and Pennington missing out.

That attack wouldn’t fill me with confidence against a top side but this Windies lineup has almost zero Test experience in England aside from Brathwaite, Holder and Joseph. Even without Roach though, their pace bowling looks a serious threat.

Yeah.  About that attack… either it’s a minefield or the West Indies are slightly undercooked for this tour.

On a side note, anyone remember the West Indies demanded everyone called the the Windies?  That didn’t last long.
