  1. I'm hoping to get off to Tighnabruaich on Saturday. First game of season for me - a three-hour drive awaits! But I have a new car to break in, so it should be fun.

Expecting to be ravenous when I get through - any tips for lunch venues??

Next game will then be cup final in Glasgow.

  2. Mogwai was the last gig we saw before we became parents - saw them on April 29th with due date as May 13th.

That's brilliant / brave - I can imagine the wee one would have been kicking away frantically at some of the louder moments!

We went to see King Creosote at a similar stage in our pregnancy. A touch mellower! And we came with our own cushions - a first for me at a gig!

  3. Do you just give her the granules directly, you don't need to dissolve them? (And is that the pic from Mogwai Ep+6 as your avatar mate?)

    Yes to Mogwai!

Yeah, just feed them directly via wee plastic spoon they give you in the packet. Tricky to get them to swallow the wee buggers at first!

Quite hard to find them. I go to the big Boots on Princes St now, get them over the counter upstairs. Not many of the wee branches seem to stock them.

  4. Wee girl. Cristina. She's great. Feeding well, poops like she's been on the Guinness. She fell asleep 30 mins before the CL final on Saturday and lasted right thru the whole game, which I definitely owe her a beer for when she's old enough. Only bother seems to be wind - wife's sister recommended colocynthis, going to check with the doc if she's ok to get it with her being so young.

I'd recommend the colocynthis granules too! They're bloody expensive and a bugger to get out from their wee bottle onto the spoon, but they can make a big difference.

  5. Mine coming up to nine-months old. Had a couple of minor health concerns so far, but he got the all-clear today for the last of them.

He's started crawling about the place and is making wee words up in his own unique language. And tomorrow he starts at baby jail, aka nursery!

Its been bloody tiring so far, some dark days and some fun days, but we feel like the really fun part has now started with him. Can't wait to have a walking-talking wee man to play with!!

  6. Ajax have a wee ground behind the Arena called - I think - De Toekomst. Their reserves play there - it seats 5,000, and holds the bar we were taken to prior to a PSV game.

It is a cracking ground - modern stand on one side, bar behind the goal overlooking pitch, compact terracing elsewhere.

I'd love to see some of our new grounds look like it - looked quite atmospheric.

Closest comparable here would be Linlithgow - but theirs is a much smaller scale.

  7. "Yes I am a long way from home" was brilliant - so long since I've heard that live! Took me back to a storming night at the Liquid Rooms in late 90s when they had a big Winnie Poo on stage by drums. Sure Aidan came on stage as a second drummer that night.

They're superb live - would happily see them again tonight!

  8. I'm based at Waverley, so something I can do in under an hour is handy. Ideally in a location that doesn't involve weaving through tourists.

    How about:

Starting from Balmoral, head down Leith St, then along London Rd to Meadowbank Stadium. Then back via Meadowbank Terrace into the park, pass Holyrood Palace, then along Calton Rd back up past The Venue (RIP) and back to the start. Just over 5.1k and only 64m of ascent which isn't bad for Edinburgh!

Edit: 64m of ascent is same as Palace up to Castle Esplanade - that's quite a bit of climbing on reflection!

  9. I have had a lot of knee trouble recently, and have been struggling. I ran up between Salisbury Crags and Arthurs Seat yesterday, before coming down through the trees at the back of St Leonards along a muddy footpath. While doing so I disturbed two chaps who were in the process of pulling up their trousers. This leaves me wondering, is there anywhere a bit less hilly in Edinburgh suitable for running?

    Good grief!

Have you tried the canal towpath from Fountainbridge? I run from there to aqueduct at Corn Exchange and back at lunchtime - nice 7k flat.

Or another flat route is the cycle path leaving from Balbirnie Pl / Russell Rd towards Newhaven or Sth Queensferry.

    O

  10. Hey guys, went out for my second ever run today. Last one was in late December. Please be gentle but attached are my stats using some app.

My plan is to run a bit further each day, with the aim of doing the 5k park run in two weeks. Does anyone think thats doable or have any other feedback or advice for a beginner?

I think that's doable! 9 min per mile is a good comfortable pace. Your 5k would take you about 30 minutes at that pace. So I'd build slowly - add a couple of minutes each run until Park Run, and you'll get there. Take it easy, stop if you get sore. Have fun!

  11. Back to work so 7.4k lunchtime circuit of West Port, Castle, Royal Mile, Holyrood, Meadows then back to Fountainbridge.

The hill at Holyrood up towards Commy Pool was tough - into a very strong wind and tipping down.

Feel great now that I've warmed-up!!

  12. Was in the Burrell Collection this morning at back of 10 - didn't realise the park run took off from there, should have brought my kit! Great turnout by the look of things. Bit weird looking at Degas paintings with a room full of sweaty Lycra though...!

  13. Kilchoman is lovely stuff - really pleasant wee dram. It's not as punchy as some of the Southern Islay drams, but that's not a bad thing.

If you're visiting Islay, I'd put this distillery and cafe on your to-do list. Just beyond the distillery is a stunning beach and a war grave - Otranto, an American naval vessel which came aground in a storm in October 1918, with the loss of 400 men. Tragically one month prior to the Armistice. This is the Machir Bay from which the malt has been named after.

Really a wild and awesome setting - best visited like we did in an October storm, the waves are huge!

  15. She didn't tell me what the offer was, but she turned it down anyway and had the whisky bottled to take away. So they are now in possession of a number of bottles of 60 year old Glenfiddich, only one of which they are opening for the time being, and from which I had a wee nip.

I wonder how much the distillery offered for the cask?

The duty on that takeaway will have been a high four figure sum. Your nip of whisky alone will have cost that family a fair chunk of taxes. Duties being paid when the cask leaves the bonded warehouse. They were very kindly in their offering!!

  16. Are you suggesting that rather than a conflict cause by competing European empires it was the overspill from a newtonmore v kingussie game?

Ha! Archduke Ferdinand was a staunch Newtonmore man - Hugh Dan told me, it must be true!
  17. Mogwai playing Usher Hall on 8th March, tickets on-sale Friday morning.

Saw them there once before - the sound was incredible. Remember a review in paper describing it as being like a tanker grinding up Beattock's summit, or words to that effect. Brilliant night!

  18. Macaulay Cup drawn tonight - pick of the ties in Round 1 is Inveraray v Kyle, and then potentially Kingussie v Newtonmore in the Quarter Finals.

Other news - Shinty Heroes being broadcast on Alba on 29th Dec and 4th Jan featuring story of shinty and how it contributed to World War I.

Not long until the new season I suppose - I'm booked into a wee cottage in Glencoe at end of March, will be hoping to catch a game or two whilst I'm up to get my season off to a flyer. My new baby boy might curtail my travels a bit next year though!!

Finally just gifted a copy of the R Hutchinson book "Camanachd!". Looks like one to save for one of these long train journeys up the road.

A good Christmas to the regular posters in here!

  19. Having a couple of these tonight. As a novice to whisky, this stuff is really good. And it's the local distillery for me.

Ah memories (hazy memories)! We took Glengoyne in our hip flasks on the last trip to Twickenham - it is VERY drinkable, tastes grand out a wee illicit flask, and will forever be known as cooking whisky now.

  20. Because it is hard to imagine what is going through his head right now. He had stayed at the barrier all night waiting to hear anything about his dad and either the Bbc or Sky had a few seconds of him on camera standing alone looking absolutely gutted.

Just felt really sorry for him, and when I was out today and anyone spoke about the incident that image of him standing popped into my head.

Not looking good for that guy:
