Too many of the England batsmen seem to panic if they come to the crease with the score quite low and 2/3/4 wickets down. Contrast that with the Aussies last week when Clarke came in at 40-3 and goes on to score a double ton with a couple of the others having big scores too.
Certainly a decent start here for England, but they will need to bat for ages yet.
Yes I agree with that. Bell is a rime example - always looks great when coming in at 280-3 but when you need him when the chips are down he seldom delivers the goods. Hopefully Bairstow gets a shot next test
Trott was fairly poor in the last 12months of test match cricket, so hopefully he knuckles down and gets back to his previous form as England need Trott to be at his best.
eta - excellent session from the openers. More of the same tomorrow morning please

I can't believe that the ICC haven't made the referral system compulsory for all Test matches, it seems bonkers to have the technology available but not use it.
Btw, if England are to get anything out of this they have to get through this last session without loss IMO.
The ICC unfortunately do not have the backbone to stand up to the Indian board who now carry far too much power and verge on the edge of bullying with some of their posturing and input to the world game.
It also isn't being used in the Sri Lanka series which started today.
Have to agree with other posters, the 3 seamers idea was completely and utterly shambolic decision and you really have to wonder what their logic was.
The batting again pitiful in the sub continent with the same old rabbit in headlights look about certain so called experienced batsmen.
A better effort all round this innings please

It's online cowards mostly.
But, yes, the crowd gave English gentleman a lot more support - despite being a vastly inferior player.
That much is true as Henman was the chosen one, however following his golden summer Murray's popularity has rocketed.

Self hating Jews is just a stereotype, self hating Scots is a bona fide Scot.
And Murray is despised in England as well.
The boos he receives every year at Wimbledon are deafening.

Have a History essay due in for the morning that I haven't started yet. Looks like it's going to be a long night for me. More annoyingly, this is the second time I've ended up doing this in the past 2 weeks
So much for learning from History.

Series defeat. missed KP for sure
Not really. The damage he has caused to morale and team cohesion is much more than he has contributed to the team in recent seasons.
Other than one big innings per series and a couple of reasonable ones the contribution that KP has made to the england side over the last few years has diminished. In fact in recent seasons there have been regular calls to bin him from test and odi side due to poor runs of form.
Fair enough he has great ability, however how many times does he get into position to score a huge tonne only for his massive ego to get in the way and he holes out to a left arm crap spinner - paul harris anyone.
The clown thinks he is bigger than the team - nobody is. He either shapes up, begs for forgiveness and learns a bit of humility or he pisses off into the sunset and plays IPL, and never leaves the legacy in international cricket that his ability and ego wants

Kevin Peitersen clean bowled with first delivery playing for Surrey today.
He was texting at the time.

This is one of the best test matches I've ever seen. Fabulous game between comfortably the best two teams in the game.
It's just a shame it's not a five match series.

Spin bowlers have never had much success at Headingley, its a ground traditionaly that doesnt 'turn' for the spinners.
I remember Sharne Warne seething when the aussies dropped Nathan Hauritz there in 2009 and went with an extra seam bowler in stuart clarke.
They promptly bowled england out for about 100 runs
Add to the fact Swann was brutal in first test its no surprise he waa dropped IMO
Headingly is no longer a seam bowlers wet dream. The wicket has completely changed in recent years.
Swann adds balance to the attack and even when not taking wickets ties up an end, plus a good fielder and decent batsman.
Matt Prior should be batting six

Just back from 2 days at Leeds - I've got some photos of the rear of Trott I'll post later.
Utter bawbag of a decision on Thursday morning to bowl and to drop Swan, KP came on spun the ball and took a wicket 2nd ball
South African Peterson scored 180 despite looking scrappy as hell and aside from the first 10 overs or so of yesterday morning the bowling was average at best.
Totally agree with that. The decison to drop swann is bewildering, and as for putting them in... a decision pontinglike.
Cook should be fined half his match fee just for making the worst referral ever

As many of us have been calling for, for sOme time, Ravi Bopara has been dropped and James Taylor (presumably not the folk singer) has been called up.
Taylor is a real talent and I hope he does well. I want Finn in ahead of Bresnan as his height, pace and bounce should be effective at Headingly

This should be an epic series, but what a travesty there will only be three test matches. There is very little between the sides, but I'd give England the slight advantage being at home and the fact the Saffers may be slightly undercooked.
Ys it should have been a four tester. The one day series against the aussies was a complete and utter waste of everyones time. And yes it's always good to beat the aussies, but that was one thoroughly shite australian team, and i for one would rather have had another test match

On the day my SA tickets arrive Mark Boucher announces his international retirement after his eye injury yesterday.
Terrible news for all cricket fans. One of the best wicketkeeper/batsmen of all time. I recall the first time he came over to england on a tour was the series that saw the infamous Atherton/Donald spat at trent Bridge in 98.
Drs enjoy your day at cricket. Hope it is more fun than my trip to Durham last Saturday.

Morgan has been dropped from the Sri Lanka series. Bopara recalled.
Fair enough dropping morgan. Bringing back Bopara for me is a strange one - Has had several opportunities and other than scoring three tons against a mediocre WI side has generally flattered to deceive
I would have had a look at Taylor before Bopara

If england lose in sri lanka and strauss continues to not score any tons will it be time for him to move aside?
morgan has to go for a little rest

Pakistan 44/7... I suspect there's going to have to be a few modifications to the pitch before more tests are played there.
Depends on what the bookies want

Time for a question that is suitably vague and probably makes no sense.
There's a name for it, but I can't remember what it is, (think it came from a classic play or something) where everyone plays a part in a murder or a crime, so as everyone can have deniability. Does that make sense?
Edit: The question is, if anyone knows what I'm on about, what's it called and where is it from?
murder on the orient express i think it's from but i cant help with other half of the question

How can you stab someone 16 times in the head, throat, back and shoulders and be found not guilty of trying to murder them?
Shambles.
maybe he was an acupuncture student

Why do a number of the Raith Rovers fans have 2711 as part of their username? I presumed it was something to do with playing Bayern Munich for some reason but I've sinced been told that they played Bayern in October of 1995.
Cheers.
its the date they won the league cup in 1994

Absolutely brilliant two days test cricket by England. Need to round it off and level this series
Stuart Broad has been voted as one of India's most valuable players this test.
