A shame indeed! Significant amount of investment has been put into trying to fix the problem but I've been told all the problems stem from the drainage and the burn 20 yards away from the pitch - I'm also led to believe Merksworth is one of the lowest points in Dalry if not the lowest!

Pity as Dalry brought a right good crowd to Ardrossan last Friday night - was happy to catch up with some old pals despite the result....but aye in all my 25 years supporting the Winton, Merksworth lets say, hasn't been the most reliable - but it occasionally does surprise you.....

Vale of Leven 4-1 Newmains United.

A fairly comfortable evening for the Vale all told. Newmains' keeper kept them in it with some excellent saves, but that's not to say they didn't create chances, with pur own keeper called into action more than once. A good three points, onto Ardrossan on Saturday.

Ardrossan Winton Rovers 0-0 Vale of Leven.

Delighted with the point on the road. And what a glorious day it was for a game. Thanks to AWR for their hospitality.

Was no far from the bar for the entire game....sunburnt....I was the boy shouting for Winter fitba.......only kidding....

  4. I do remember,as a former junior club secretary, having a disagreement with the odd referee who wanted the shorts changed as both teams had same colour of shorts. Socks I get - no problem with that and on occasion the socks have been replaced, but shorts? I did point out to the said referee that should he make grade one, would he be telling either of the ugly sisters that one of them had to change? or Hertz or Hibs? Curiously he backed away and said shorts were as laid out in the dressing room prior to inspection.

It did remind me that when it comes to the laws of the game, the match referee is in fact God  (and some of them actually believe the hype.....).

  5. Outstanding stuff. Great read and love to look back at the players involved. I personally only once faced a Tayport XI  (when they were still an amateur outfit albeit with a few teams) as a jersey filler for one of the poorer teams in the area ( amateur fitba in Fife is complicated) but the now (recently departed) United Colleges XI got stuffed at least 11 or 12 nil at St Andrews Uni in the late 80's and I was a sub for the university second XI....hence jersey filler

    Ardrossan Winton Rovers completely shafted.

I love my days oot but this isn't great news for the club who have a policy of running buses to away games. I would have expected some more local games, but a local derby v Neilston or EKT isn't quite what I had in mind.

  7. From what I can see, today may be the first meeting of Winton Rovers v Carluke Rovers. We may have played in the Scottish pre 1939 ( I don't have any records prior to this) but not in the West of Scotland cup.

(there may have been a friendly at Loch Park back in the late 90's but think this could be the first competitive tie)

    14th v 1st as well......here's hoping for a Rovers victory 😀

  8. One from Ardrossan from 1947 .. would that be ardrossan winton rovers ground , on right about half way up , next to a railway line ... here is link if anyone wants a better look ...http://www.britainfr...=glasgow& ref=59

Aye - quite a few of Ardrossan some pre and this one post war - the interesting part is pre war the park ran 90 deg to the way it currently runs - I registered and you can zoom in a good bit
