  1. Your correct Sloop, the area around KGV has been earmarked for the 'learning hub' as part of the Dumfries Learning town proposals. Early plans suggest a reasonably sized facility with perhaps hundreds of pupils using the resource daily - may present increased marketing opportunities for Queens in time, or even revenue from school / council use.

  2. Haggis, bacon and red onion on a thin crust base with a bit of mozzarella and a wee touch of Stilton is amazing if making my own or pimping a shop bought pizza. Correct balance of ingredients needs sussing out, as does a slightly lower cooking temperature, but once mastered is pretty tasty.

  3. Lets put things in perspective. Where does McIntyre sit compared to McPherson and Johnston? At the beginning of the season is was very Gus-esque, though the football was slightly better to watch. Still a number of players out of position, debatable formations and a worrying league position.

As the season has progressed, as many have pointed out, things are moving slowly towards the Johnston level of performance and best use of players. Of course it's not there yet, and may never do so, but that's the expectations of many Queens fans. And I don't think it's wrong to have higher expectations but that has to be tempered against the fact this is McIntyres first season at Palmerston.

He is making decent progress - eventually - and I hope it continues with a play off place. That's a fair ask of this with the players he has inherited. I've not been his biggest fan, but he's slowly winning folk round, including myself. So where is he between Johnston and McPherson on the 'like ability' scale? Somewhere in-between for me.

Had a similar bet on but with Chelsea instead of Burnley. 20 quid well invested, a good start to the new year!

  5. Ok, so most of us acknowledge that McPherson should go. I, personally, don't care that he's only had one season at the helm, the 'product' is pathetic. Another year or two of McPherson will maybe ensure second division survival. Great. Brilliant. Super.

Don't know about the rest of the Queens fans, but I like the first division. I'd like to go back there sometime. I think thats our level, and we are underachieving otherwise. Thats not arrogance, just my feeling. A spell in the second is a dose of reality, but we need to learn from it. Taking into consideration our catchment area, demographic etc. etc. the first division is where we should be. Well done to the Ayr's and the Raiths fro showing us how it can be done. Now, heres the question - who is the manager to take Queens forward? Answer on a postcard please...

  6. At the start I anticipated a stuffy season where we wouldn't be treated to much entertainment, but would stifle the opposition and grind our way to some lower mid-table finish.

However, we've been incredibly shit to watch and yet have not been at all difficult to beat. In other words, it's been the worst of both worlds.

I was glad to see Gus appointed, partly in that - to use your analogy - he wasn't merely nearest the chair when the music stopped. I honestly don't see how the season could have gone worse though and to give him an extension would be comically stupid.

    This.

  7. Don't question it. Just enjoy it. It may all change, it my not. Both my second and fourth babies have been angels. The second was like that until he reached toddlerhood, my youngest is 7 months and still doesn't cry, he laughs and smiles and cuddles and squeals, but never cries. Just enjoy it while you have it.

Regarding your question, it depends on other things, such as what you're doing now and if she's gaining weight normally. It might be an idea to have a chat with your health visitor as they'll have your details there. Personally, I'm not keen on the idea of waking a sleeping baby, but there certainly are times when it's necessary and I've needed to do it. Sorry, it's a vague answer!

    Thanks.

  8. I think I've been spoiled so far with my wee one. 6 weeks old on Monday. For past 2 weeks she has went down at roughly 10 pm, wakes for a feed about 3am then up again about 7 am, just as I get up for work. She rarely cries, only agitation when she's hungry. Have I struck it lucky? Has anybody had a similar kid and seen the early patterns remain or will this go Pete tong and I'll get a huge serving of feck-you-this-is-what-real-parenting-is-about from my daughter? Also, at the 6 week stage do you think it's ok to let them sleep as long as they wish? Or better to wake them to continue a more structured feeding pattern? Cheers.

  9. Mortgages :( - I'd really appreciate some help from anybody with a bit of knowledge in the area. I've made an appointment with an advisor but won't see them until next week so any assistance in the meantime would be spot on.

My wife and I are looking to upgrade to a more family friendly house. We went to see one today, which is actually through a friend-of-a-friend kind of thing. The house is ideal. They are looking to sell quick-ish. House valued at about 200k, but willing to accept 185k. In hypothetical terms, after we sell out house , pay solicitors fees etc. we should have 30-35k as a deposit.

When getting quotes do you use the house value (200k) or the amount you have agreed (in principle) to buy at (185k)?

This will have pretty big issues in LTV percentages etc. and whether we put down a 15, 20 or 25% deposit - Ideally I'd like to keep the monthly cost down to a minimum.

If it was the 200k value, and we agree 185k, does that leave a 15k 'gap', where, if possible, I need to add 35k to the deposit to ensure a 25% deposit, therefore getting a better rate? Or do you simply use the figure you pay for the house?

I'm not too clued up on the whole mortgages business, and as stated, advice would be greatly appreciated.

  10. I have a bit of sad news I'm afraid - a friend of mine's 11 month old daughter has been diagnosed with leukaemia and I'm just devastated for them. Too sad. I've got a place running the Great North run in September, so I've decided to raise money for the charity of their choice, whether that be Yorkhill (where she's currently being treated - 4 hours from home :( ) or a children's cancer charity. I was ranting at my son for not eating his dinner yesterday then heard from my friend last night - kind of puts things in perspective.

Sorry to put a dampener on things, just wanted to put it somewhere. :(

Sorry to hear that. I hope everything goes ok for her and her daughter in the future. I've been a dad for nearly 3 days and I can already feel how your life changes, not so much the materialistic things, but the sole appreciation of life itself and how fragile it really is.

  11. Finally, after a few weeks of holding on, my wife gave birth a wonderful wee girl at 02.50 am. I'm absolutely overjoyed. A picture of health, she got home this afternoon about 4.

I'm not really an 'established' pie n bovril'er but I've continually read this thread and some of the assistance and tips and comments are incredibly helpful. I'll no doubt be back on for advice and assistance, but I'm off to change some nappies...

  12. Wife was due next week, on the 5th. After today's visit to doctor to check out her back pain, we've been told that her due date is wrong. By over 2 weeks. Bloody hell... Ah well, as long as it's healthy. Messed up my planned pat. leave though. Work won't be too happy but sod them.

  13. Any mechanics on here? After a wee bit of advice.

I've a 2.0 HDi Citroen Berlingo van which I use for transporting my bike about. Was up Ae forest last weekend and whilst on the track roads I smacked into a boulder and cracked the sump and sump guard as well as cracking the bumper. Picked up a sump yesterday, fitted fine, new gasket etc. Serviced it at same time (oil, fuel, air filter etc). I never bought any oil as I knew I had 3-4 litres or so in the garage. Dug out oil, just about to top it up this evening with 10w/40 semi-synthetic, but the label said it was for petrol engines.

Will it be ok to use? Googled it, lots of contradicting opinions on whether it will be ok or not (allegedly diesel engine oil has more detergent content?).

Advice greatly appreciated from anybody with the knowledge- would save me twenty-odd quid should the oil be ok to use.
