I cant see why he couldn't be included in the squad come March. I've mentioned in another thread that we really don't have a lot of players playing regular/playing well just now. In the scenario that things aren't going well against Cyprus (I hope this isn't the case) he would be the perfect sub to come on for the last 20/25. Lifts the crowd and gets us up the pitch.

To look at it from a positive note. I we are doing well against Cyprus can give him the last 15 minutes.

Would definitely have him involved in the squad. Can only be a positive thing to try and integrate someone who looks to have massive potential as early as possible.

I see the usual crowd who think that a place the Scotland squad should be some kind of player of the week award are out in force.

Must be tiring getting so upset about who gets to sit on the bench or in the stand for the national team.

This. I’m not saying the squad is great by an stretch, however if we do get pumped, I doubt the likes of Barry McKay would drastically change it. Now that’s not to say I’m not a fan of say McKay and that I wouldn’t be for the squad getting freshened up a wee bit but I get Clarkes selection. Defence however is a massive concern.

Based on Clarkes previous line ups etc I’d go- Gordon, Patterson, Hendry, Hanley, Tierney, Hickey, McGregor, McTominay, McGinn, Dykes, Adams.

I’d imagine the line up will be very like this with Gilmour, Christie, Armstrong, Jack and Fraser contenders to be involved.

The worst thing about Iwelumo's miss was it giving Kris Boyd some sort of false vindication for being a petulant c**t about it and refusing to play for Scotland.

If I remember correctly Iwelumo had started the season very well with Wolves who were top of the championship and Boyd was in and out of the Rangers team, being left on the bench regularly for the bigger games. It’s completely understandable why Burley opted for Iwelumo. Then as we know Boys refuses to play, makes his comeback as a substitute against the Czechs. Starts again Liechtenstein and plays a stinker, gets subbed after an hour or so and  never plays for Scotland again. Scored a few goals against a few diddy nations and far from the worst player to play for Scotland but was still nowhere near good enough to have had a longer Scotland career.

That is unlikely for a country of our size although Belgium have done it and we are closer in population to them than Germany or Brazil. A more realistic aim is to have 3-4 top players and a bunch of players who are good players and sufficient to play to a managers plan. Lots of small countries that do well may only have 1 or 2 top players but the rest of the team are capable of playing to a good level and tactics. Apart from Bale and Ramsay Wales are pretty average but the rest of the team can play a good support role which has gave them a very successful recent spell. I think we almost have the supporting players but we just need a few gems to come through.

Something like the recent Croatia team would be a realistic dream IMO (not suggesting we will get to a World Cup final) especially if more players keep moving abroad. Just say in the next 5 years or so you had Tierney at Arsenal, Gilmour at Chelsea, Hickey and Hepburn at Bayern. Then perhaps a core of players playing at random clubs such as Everton, Hoffenheim, Fiorentina etc. Always felt sticking to the UK is something that has held the home nations back.

Davie Irons will be an interesting appointment. He's probably not the most exciting prospect but he did us a good turn in his first 18-month spell in charge of the club - the survival of the 2010/11 season was exceptional and some of the football we played in 2011/12 was excellent. Looking back, we should have finished in the Championship play-offs that year. He also seems to have a strong affinity with Stenhousemuir, something you don't often see at this level.

I do worry that he'll have to unexpectedly pack it in again due to his work commitments but I hope that isn't the case.

The recruitment over the summer was poor and we don't have a great group of players to work with at the moment but if he can get the best out of Wullie Gibson, Thomas Halleran and Mark McGuigan, we should have enough to move away from the bottom of the table and compete with the top four. I hope.

He works as a community police officer Monday-Friday so work commitments shouldn’t get in the way.

The thing I liked about Irons during his first time at the club was he understood the types of players needed to be successful. His recruitment was excellent in his first spell so hopefully it will be this time around as our recruitment has been poor for a couple of seasons now.

  6. Enjoyable as always. For Scottish Football Coverage at 11 on a Friday I can’t complain. I coach at Stenhousemuir and seen them filming the goalkeeper segment from last night and was wondering what the hell was going on when I was down.

Also that Patrick song was shite and made me cringe yet it’s stuck in my head and I’ve watched the video of it in YouTube several times.

  7. Personally enjoyed the episode, although at times it feels like I’m the only one who still likes the show.

The time jump will be interesting, obviously it’s a great opportunity to start fresh if you will.

I’m a bit concerned about all the talks of spin offs. Granted the Walking Dead is a cash cow they are going to continue to milk but I would rather the main show is finished before they go crazy with them. Although just seeen Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride have signed new deals which basically means they can appear in The Walking Dead, Spin offs or get paid for doing nothing  so they won’t be going anywhere so I expect it to go in for another few seasons.

  8. Not seen him play so can’t say whether he deserves a call up or not. From what I’ve read it sounds like he’s doing well so I would hope McLeish is keeping tabs on him. Although I don’t think he’s ever heard of Verona.

  9. What a load of shite.

People I’ve spoken to around the club have said that Mick has been offered terms and is yet to respond, if what Moonglum is reporting is true then surely Mick would have been released?

As far as I’m aware the players have an automatic contract extension in the event of us making the playoffs.

If I’m being really wide the players spoke to Bomber on the Thursday and not the Tuesday.

Recruitment has been difficult but our budget is based on finishing bottom, so we avoid ending up in the same position we were in a couple of years back. It was always going to be a difficult season but recruitment so far has been decent.

  10. Had a look at the booze when I was in Asda earlier and with the exception of Captain Morgan’s which has went up £1.50 everything I drink is the same so not bothered too much at the moment. My concern is I fully expect the minimum price of 50p to increase in the coming years.

From what I looked at the most notable price increase was your larger boxes of beer and cider, such as a 24 pack of Budweiser is now £16 something where it used to be £12.

Here's a question for the good online Warriors: who would you want to keep hold of for next season and who would you want to release?

I know there's still a couple of games left and we're still in the race for promotion but regardless, I think changes are required for next term.

    KEEP

    • Mark McGuigan
      • The big striker has been generally excellent over the course of the season and our only true source of goals. Keeping him must be a priority, although I can imagine other teams will have taken an interest in him.
    • Mark Ferry
      • An underwhelming signing last summer, Mark Ferry's probably been our most consistent player this season, someone who's good at retaining possession and keeping things ticking over. He needs someone with energy to play alongside him in the middle of the park but I'd be disappointed to see him elsewhere next year.
    • Ruaridh Donaldson
      • Although his form's dipped a little over the last few months, Ruaridh Donaldson's had a good debut season in the senior leagues. There's tonnes of potential there and, for the first time in ages, we have a young player capable of progressing further up the foodchain. Like McGuigan, I reckon other clubs might be keen on him.
    • Ross Meechan
      • Having established himself at right-back after spending so long filling in for others, Ross Meechan's had a decent season. He does need to improve his crossing but he's a very solid lower-league full-back.
    • Ross Dunlop
      • Ross Dunlop hasn't been too hot over the last few weeks (hey, who has!) but when he's at his best he's a classy ball-playing defender and there aren't too many of them around. I'd definitely keep him.
    • Mick Dunlop
      • You can more or less apply what I've written about Ross Dunlop and apply it to his brother. He hasn't been to great recently but he's proven himself to be decent this year, even if he is advancing in years.
    • Harry Paton
      • There is no way in a million years that Harry Paton will be at Stenhousemuir next term but it's nice to dream all the same.

I'm ambivalent on the rest of the squad. Players like Jamie Longworth and Jimmy Scott have not delivered what's been expected of them. At 37, Colin McMenamin might have an eye on retirement. Chris Smith hasn't been as steadfast as I would have hoped. Alan Cook has disappointed since returning to the club on loan. Eddie Ferns is too damn inconsistent. David Marsh can't bee happy with his bit-part role this season.

Pretty much agree with this. I would keep Chris Smith and Alan Cook, whilst they haven’t shown the form they are capable of I still think they are worth keeping. I wouldn’t be against Colin McMenamin staying on, on the basis he isn’t the go to sub when we are getting beat. The rest can go. Marsh is a liability, Ferns not good enough, Longworth has been poor.

I actually think we have a decent spine but losing Paton will be a blow, don’t want to even think about losing McGuigan. If we can get the back 4, Smith, Ferry, Cook and McGuigan signed up I’d be happy with that to start with. Then think we need some quality out wide, another striker so we’re not completely relying on McGuigan and then somehow attempt to replace Paton.

Are you or anyone else close enough to this mate to read between the lines or estimate how the SFC Supporters Trust will convey the fans views and how they'd likely vote?

Hopefully see a few other clubs follow the lead

I think they would vote against it but it’s based off nothing more than I’ve not spoke to a Stenny fan who is in favour of the idea.

  13. Stenhousemuir statement on the matter

"The Club is aware of the current media speculation regarding the introduction of SPFL Premiership Colt Teams into the professional league set-up.

At present, there is no formal proposal from the SPFL for clubs to consider.

What has happened, is that a proposal for a pilot project has been put forward by Rangers and Celtic football clubs.  This is being discussed at league level by the SPFL Competitions Working Group.  If it is thought there is merit in looking at the proposals in further detail, it would be put to consideration and vote by all 42 clubs within the SPFL.

Representatives of Rangers and Celtic are currently meeting with clubs in League 2 to present details of their pilot proposals.  A number of Directors at Stenhousemuir met with a representative from Rangers and received the presentation.

No formal discussions have taken place within the club on the proposals as yet.

In order to take this forward, the club will be working with the SFC Supporters Trust to ensure that the views of fans can be put forward and taken into account prior to the Board formulating the club's view.

There will no doubt be arguments both for and against any proposals to enter colt teams in the SPFL setup.  It is important to hear both sides of the argument, and make an informed decision that is the right thing for Stenhousemuir Football Club, the League, and the future development of Scottish football."

  14. My parents met a couple on holiday once who didn't speak to use for the first few days as they thought we were German. Been mistaken for German a few times.

Also last year on holiday some Russian guy, thick Russian accent, came over to me and asked if I could go and confirm to his son, born and raised in Brooklyn, that I spoke English. Should have seen the look of shock on his face. Still amuses me that it was the Russian that knew I was speaking English.
