  1. Same thing with me when I stopped off in Stornoway on the way to the Faroes - I imagined it was going to be a bigger version of the likes of Portree, but it's a right bleak, dismal place.

That's a bit harsh, I think. Stornoway and Kirkwall (mentioned in the previous post) are both working ports, rather than tourist-oriented like Portree. I suppose the kind of industrial character makes the waterfronts seem a wee bit bleak, but they're far from dismal.

Stornoway's got some cracking places to eat (HS1 and An Lanntair, particularly), a good mix of shops (unlike Portree) and Lews Castle grounds (home to the excellent HebCelt festival). It is lacking in good pubs though.

  2. If you're driving a 7.5t just now you'll have to do 5 x 7hr courses before September. Also, like most companies paying for it, they'll probably have you doing it in your own time at the weekend.

CPC is an absolute waste of time cash cow. You need to do 5 x 1hr sessions over 5 years but you can do the same course each time. Pointless scam.

"Pointless scam" is spot-on. I'm self-employed so had to pay for it myself.

Sitting in a classroom as some droning clown tries desperately to drag 7 hours out of a module that had absolutely no relevance to what I do for a living.

Still, at least I got to show my shiny new card to VOSA.

  3. Has anyone read john dies at the end? Probably the craziest thing ive ever read. Cant wait to see the film

A brilliant read. Ridiculously unhinged. As is the sequel "This Book Is Full Of Spiders".

I don't think the film had a theatrical release over here. At most, there were maybe showings at festivals. Which was a shame. You can get it on Region 1 blu-ray through Amazon. I don't know when it'll be released over here.

ETA. I've just had a look on Amazon. It's being released on 17th Feb. That's brightened up a Monday morning.

  4. Frustratingly, pictures from RCAHMS seem to be blocked from upload on P&B. However, it'll open on this link:

and there you see the loch and Easter Road Stadium as it was just before the East Stand was rebuilt in 2010.

Incidentally, the 3G pitch at the bottom of the picture - in Leith Academy playing fields - is on the old Hawkhill Park, one-time SFL venue of Leith Athletic. Another example of Scottish League grounds only a long goalkick apart.

    Cheers, HJ.

I shall mount an expedition forthwith. Are the natives peaceable? I shall require their services as bearers and suchlike.

  5. North looking South.

The water on the left is in Lochend park, hence the Lochend Brazil. The bridge of doom is just out of picture on the right.

    Cheers.

Is the loch still there? I live quite close to Easter Road but I've never noticed Lochend Park.

  6. Easter Road opened in 1893, the old Main Stand being built in 1924. 'Back' of the East Terrace was built during the 1950s.

Couple of questions - What direction was that taken from? Is that a body of water in the top-left corner? If it is, what was called and what happened to it?

  7. John O Groats.

I used to love taking people there.

People: Are we going to John O Groats?

Me: Do you really want to?

    People: Yes.

    Me: It's shite, though.

People: But it says on the itinerary...

    Me: Ok...you asked for it.

    (Drive to JoG)

People: Is this it? This is shite.

Me: Nobody ever listens me. It's a curse.
