  1. As a fairly lazy b*****d I've hardly been out running, been swimming instead.
Today was the first outside run of the year for me, 6km in 35 minutes.

Need to get into a better routine to lose the beer belly I think, cutting out drink would help but I enjoy a pint too much when I'm out to be honest

I'm the same. I want to take the running to the next level but enjoy my beer too much. Going to look at diets to see what would be best to improve the running. Just canny give up the beer though!!!
  2. I'm interested in this too, don't fancy having to carry a phone when I'm running. Was thinking about a fitbit.

I've got a Garmin forerunner 235. It's been great going out without my phone but I'm not sure the gps is 100%. It seems to underestimate by 1-200 meter per 10k. Quite frustrating when your doing races. The garmin Fenix range look brilliant but not cheap.

Yes, but only 5% use it. Scandinavia is more of a cultural term than strictly geographical. The Scandinavian countries share a Viking heritage as well as written history and folklore, Finland was never part of that.

Language wise Finnish is pretty different too. I work with some Finnish guys who say a lot of people resent Swedish being one of the official Languages. Road signs are in both languages. Finnish is a mad language. One of the Uralic languages.

This link is cracking for a breakdown of European languages.

They are my brand of choice. I'm also due a change soon, must be about 600-700km on mine now.

My non-technical survey looks like Brookes, Saucony and Asics are the popular choices. I'll probably try a few different ones when I head up but Brooks GTS 16 for £74 look like the best value. I like giving my money to the likes of Achilles Heel too.

  5. I wrote a post that's vanished...bah. Let's try again.

I ran the Southside Six last week. Have to say, although the legs weren't happy with it a week after Snowdonia, I enjoyed the event. The marshals were great, the weather was decent, and I didn't get lost! I consider that a success. Happy to finish in under 2 hours, too.

Took advantage of the feed afterwards. Love a post-race buffet.

The parkrun this morning qas faster than it felt, but I'm not sure the Bella 10k will be too special tomorrow. We'll see!

I'm heading up for the Bella 10k this morning. Looks a fast course. Hoping for a pb south of 45 but Friday nights session is still hanging about... will see. Not sure if the 12 start is good or not so. I think in my recovery state it's not bad.
  6. Did a 10k today in 45 minutes. Probably the longest distance I've ran since I was in a club aged about 11. Feel fine doing those distances and know I can knock a good bit off the time if I do it more regular but I get very bored running for too long!

That's my big problem. Gave up on music a while back but will try again. Biggest problem was making up a playlist. I've got Spotify but yet to find a playlist on that. Getting too old....
  7. Enjoyed Linwood parkrun this morning. Course is as flat as anything, Strava barely registered an elevation change. Went off too fast, forgetting I'd run 12 miles yesterday, but finished in 22:13 which was 20th out of 89 and enough for 2nd in my age group (first was 2-3 minutes faster!). Quite narrow which made passing the guy with the pram an early priority.

Haha guy with the pram is very hard to pass at some bits. Luckily he beat me last week...

  8. Really enjoyed Livingston parkrun this morning. Good challenging course, not one for a pb. But I like the final 1km as you can judge how hard to run. 20.37 was good enough to get me 11th out of over 200, which is quite surprising. I think I could have went faster though with more course knowledge.

    Good friendly volunteers as expected.

My legs are going to struggle round this 10k tomorrow, but I knew Im not in good enough shape for a good 10k just now anyway. Just try and enjoy it.

You obviously have high standards. That's some time!

Eight miles in 1:14:45 today. Longest run I've had yet in preparation for the Glasgow half and on a route that's likely to be similar in terms of rises and falls as Glasgow. Felt good at the end and I think extrapolating out id be looking at about 2:02 for the HM. Hoping to get under two hours in Glasgow but I'll need to sharpen up a little bit to get that I think!

Your first half? I assume you've ran a 10k, did you adjust your pace for the half? by how much?

  10. After a 2 week holiday I'm getting right back into it. Got a 5k PB at Linwood Parkrun on Saturday at 21:39. Next up is Paisley 10k on Sunday which I'm hoping for around 46 minutes.

My next big one is Glasgow on 2nd October. Do I try and up the game to my 1st half marathon or stick to 10k? I've looked at joining some training plans late on and they don't seem to crazy compared to what I'm doing. If I go for the half marathon and some sort of training plan then it will be the first time I've tried the interval running. Any tips for it? Just seems like a strange concept in my head. Sure it'll be ok after a couple of go's.

I think I've convinced myself about the Glasgow half just typing this out..... Now for a target time!

  11. Weights won't help your running tbh - just more bulk. If that is what you want then that is fine - I am a vain bugger and look like a muscle man compared to most runners! Not that I am big or anything, just that I am far from a beanpole! My coaches have often told me to try to lose half a stone, but no chance of that lol!

Sub 45 is possible from that time - intervals and core work (sit-ups/leg raises etc) are the most important components to getting there imo.

Thanks man. It's just amounts that get me ie. I'm I doing enough or too much. I just keep running and running. Not thought about anything else.

    Cheers

  12. I did some weight training on Saturday and my legs have felt achey from squatting ever since.  I do like lifting weights though, am going to have to balance it with running - twice a week for weights, three runs a week I think.  Maybe up the lifting, run parkrun and longrun at weekends?

This is where I want to do some work.

My first (official) 10k was the Glasgow Mens and came in at 47:47. Want to hit 45 for the Paisley 10k. Do you have a set programme for the weights? What weights are you using?

    Cheers
