  1. I found that my ginger beer was quite watery and lacking in flavor to be honest. I've since been advised to use grated ginger rather than the powdered ginger to give it more kick.

I bought a coopers lager kit which I'm drinking right now and turned out perfectly nice, I recommend them.

I'm wanting to go back to the ginger beer though and I've bought a coopers ginger beer kit for 11 quid. Should produce around 33 pints which is good value.

  2. I would expect it to take longer in the barrel.

In empty 2 litre plastic bottles, they are normally back into shape after a week, and need to be bled a bit after a fortnight or more.

The advantage of the plastic bottles is that they can be checked daily and any excess pressure let off as necessary.

Cheers for the advice, I will let it sit for a couple of weeks before checking it again, or if the barrel explodes!

  3. Seriously - I would advise going down the 3/4 full 2 litre bottle route. The ginger beer produces large amounts of CO2. I wouldn't risk putting it into glass unless your kitchen is easily wiped down!

I kind of assumed it would have calmed down after 4 weeks in the barrel but I have been keeping plastic bottles as well.

Incidentally, how long does it take for the pressure to start building? That's one day now and its flat and lifeless. I'm guessing it takes time?

  4. I've had a few bubbles in mine and the lid popped off and turned 180 degrees so it was facing upwards (it's obviously not a screw-on lid, a Douwe Egberts coffee jar) so I must be doing something correctly. I've had to put a layer of tin foil underneath which seems to have stopped it from popping for the moment.

If it helps, my 'solid' is paste-like also.

Keep us updated. I'd like to know if it's worth it! I saw a recipe on-line for how to make it within three days, but I'll persevere with this method for just now.

Unsure why that link mentioned using jars with a lid but I would remove it and use a thin cloth just to keep out any foreign objects.

After a week the jar has a really sweet alcoholic aroma to it, will be interesting to see what percentage the finished product will be.

  5. I've never used a lid - just left it on the kitchen worktop to do its magic

I assume your barrel will be able to take the pressure? I've only ever used the bottles and opened them as required, so don't know how well it will keep in a barrel.

The "solid" part is never any more solid than a paste. If you plan on keeping your plant going, remember to split it into two or it will die. You can keep both halves separately or gift half to another brewer or throw half out but make sure you split it!

The barrel has some sort of valve at the top that I guess will release the pressure when it gets too much. Cost 30 quid delivered from ebay.

For bottles I've been tanning loads of budweisers and keeping the empties. Bought bottle caps again from ebay which are only a couple of quid per 100.

Also bought a hydrometer to measure the alcohol content once its ready.

Apart from the initial outlay of.the barrel and a few ingredients its really an inexpensive exercise.

Just a waiting game now I suppose.

  6. Day two: Fed my plant just there. The lid of the coffee jar I'm using has already popped off so it seems to be doing the business. Smells a lot like ginger beer now which is good. One week before the bottling process!

I'm around one week ahead of you. The first couple of days nothing much was happening in the jar so i removed the lid and covered it with a cloth instead. From then on you could see the chemical process taking place.

Gave it an extra couple of days to make up for the first couple of days in the air tight jar.

I bought a 5 gallon barrel instead of messing around with plastic bottles and have just strained the contents of the jar into the barrel to leave for 4 weeks.

I'm not sure how solid the 'solid' part of the contents should be but mine's was more a brown paste and no where near what I would consider solid. Unsure if its okay or something to do with the first few days of nothing happening.

Will give an update in a months time.

  7. There isn't a huge choice in Lochgilphead! I just get whatever is in stock at the local deli.

I've bought some on eBay so will hopefully get started in a few days time.

Am I right that you squeeze the air out the bottles and screw the lid whilst the bottle is still misshaping and the build up of co2 pushes the bottle back into shape?

I love science, especially when it gets me blootered.

  8. and you can be sure The Sun or Daily Record have already been in contact to offer her family 2 paid holidays a year to Peru in exchange for exclusive rights to updates and her story on release.

I cant recall the percentage of sentence that has to be served in a foreign jail before eligible for transfer but I think its around two thirds.

Wonder if her solicitor doubles up as her agent.

  9. was reading about the appeal of granny Lindsay Sandiford, another innocent drug mule who was caught in Indonesia with 4.8Kg of cocaine worth a street value of 1.5 million.

    http://www.metro.co.uk/2013/01/22/british-woman-lindsay-sandiford-sentenced-to-death-in-indonesia-over-drug-smuggling-3360987/

got me thinking, what streets are they referring to?

The Peru two were caught with 11Kg at a street value of 1.5 million!

How does that work then? Is it a quality issue or is the international smuggling of cocaine subject to world trade economics?

    or something

  10. She would have been well advised not to open her mouth there, must have thought she was going to talk her way out of it, hand over the mysterious packages and board a flight.

    Her statements look too rehearsed.

Hope her family are loaded or the house will be getting remortgaged just to deal with legal and travel expenses, unless they decide to let her rot.

Would also love to hear how she just managed to travel to Peru from a working holiday in Spain with someone I assume she has just met.

Hope she kept the receipt from the machu picchu gift shop.

  11. Extremely unlikely these two were set up as a diversion tactic considering the quantities reported being exported from Peru.

Probably more a case of them not following instructions and instead of packing it into condoms to be swallowed they thought it would be undetectable emptying some Peruvian coffee jars instead.

No doubt these girls are total party loving air heads and will pay for their stupidity by spending a few years in some shitty sweaty prison. Their lives are over as I doubt the authorities will want to be seen as taking a soft approach with them.

Anyone have any idea how money condoms it would take to swallow that amount?
