I was in Germany about 8 years ago and the supermarket had a machine that you fed plastic bottles and juice tins into. It then gave you a ticket worth x amount that was as good as cash in the shop. There were folk queued up to use it all the time.

They also had this system in Denmark when I was there a few years ago.

Okay, I had a flat in East Lothian which was owned by my wife and myself. We rented it out, claimed 100% rates relief but paid water rates. During the pandemic we lost renters but, rightly or wrongly just thought it was immoral to claim grants on a property on which we had no mortgage and minimal expenses.
You obviously are knowledgeable on. these matters but we were quite happy to just not bother claiming.

Rates on a flat, a domestic property ?

If the property is a furnished holiday let it is a commercial property and qualifies for rates relief, and you will only pay the water rates, which will be cheaper than staying registered for Council Tax. However, there also was an income restriction, so that if the income from holiday letting was only a small part of total income (if you had another job) you still would not qualify for the LA grant.

  3. Woman's husband has just passed away. She goes into the local newspaper office to put a death notice in the paper.

She hands the receptionist a piece of paper, and on it is written:

    Jock Reid, Peterheid, Deid.

The receptionist says that she can have up to seven words, but she has only used four.

The woman has a think, and writes on the piece of paper, and hands it back.

Jock Reid, Peterheid, Deid, Volvo for sale.

  4. I don't think anyone will be round.

We moved house several years ago and transferred our TV licence to our new address. No problems.

Later my wife set up a new DD for the TV licence. Since then we get the same threatening letters regularly, and we put them in the bin.

There are only 3 houses in our post code. I suspect that because our house has a 'name' and it is on the address on the licence, it cannot be matched with the house number on the TV licence database, but we are not fixing it, and always hope someone will come round.

There is none of the three options open to us: We watch TV, already have a licence and don't have one to transfer, so we cannot do anything about it.

Kilmarnock Enforcement must have spent well over £100 by now.

I've not heard of Black Isle Media before, but if there's any truth in these allegations, it looks as if Dominic Cummings & his father have been breaching planning laws and not paying council tax on the "spare cottage"

Will be interesting to see if this is picked up by the MSM

There is reference to Durham Council investigating lack of planning permission on the Telegraph live newsfeed this afternoon.

DC will be on toast by the weekend!

I wouldn't worry too much over any of this, as the game will change dramatically when Brenda bites the dust.

There are millions of royalists with a small 'r' in the UK who admire her sense of duty and continuity but who will not transfer their interest never mind their respect to her weedy son. Charles has waited a long time for his starring role but he might well be left wondering if it was worth it. Too fucking bad.

When Brenda bites the dust, this would be an ideal opportunity to appoint a president of our new independent republic. But who would we pick for the first president. Not some washed up ex politician. Follow Ireland and have a literary personality? Someone from the media or entertainment?

Dont say Sean Canary, as it needs to be someone who actually lives here.  So who is there?

    Lorraine Kelly?

  7. ….and the Arsenal and Chelsea fans complaining (as was the MSM) that it was too far away and took too long and cost too much.

Try going to Kazakhstan in March, and see your team getting pumped 3-0, and then only having two days to get from there to San Marino.

    What a bunch of wimps!

Go and speak to Clarke now and if he is interested, confirm him on Monday 20th May when Killie's season is over.  If he isn't interested...……….

and she does a good job with the girls this summer, then give the job to Shelley Kerr.

Why not? if its basically about building a happy camp, she can do this.

  9. Sarah Smith from the BBC was in Largs today, interviewing locals about the Community Garden at the Railway Station.

She then proceeded to ask my missus (and others) about Independence and Brexit. This interview is scheduled to go out on Wednesday, as (apparently):

Nicola is going to make an announcement about Indyref 2 on Tuesday!

    You heard it here first.:thumsup2

Crazy idea, reduce vat to 15% and encourage people to spend sensibly, thus stimulating the economy?

Gordon Brown dropped the 20% rate back down to 17.5% a few years ago to 'stimulate the economy'. The prices in the shops generally didn't go down.

When the rate went up to 20% again, the prices went up.

All that happened was that the Treasury got less VAT revenues for the period when the rate was dropped!
