  1. "Any good hints/advice on writing a personal statement? I'm awesome at highlighting my negative side, not so good with the good stuff..."

In other words: "TELL ME HOW GREAT I AM."

To be fair, the first few replies are from full time mummy-types, telling her things like how 'awsum' she is, so job done in that respect.

Tell her she best focus on the negative side TBH.

  2. Didn't Barcelona players average more miles in a game than any other club in Europe?

The competitive argument is also a bit of nonsense, teams such as Villarreal don't get walked over in the league.

Well Barcelona were recently hammered by Celta Vigo.

It's a bit of a stretch to say the lower league teams of the EPL are better than their Bundesliga or La Liga equivalents - where is the evidence? Is it just they have more money - therefore better?

  3. I'll get shat on for this, but I can kind of see where he's coming from in a small way, even if he has worded it stupidly. "Strongest" is not right. More competitive is probably how to pitch it, although the gap has massively closed. I'm sure I read somewhere (maybe Tim Vickery, or someone similar for Spanish football) that in the Spanish league, if a side goes two or three down to a Barcelona or Real Madrid, the towel will often get thrown in, and they'll take the rest of the game pretty easily (Of course, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore, as more and more sides seem to be getting decent results against the big 2. So perhaps they can't even crow about being the most competitive anymore). Whereas in England, the games are less technical, and heavy on running, blood, guts, and all those other British traits. So I can kind of see why they might be in slightly worse condition going into a midweek European game.

However, that's completely ignoring the fact that a lot of sides will rest players for said big European games, and that it's condescending to the other European teams by pretty much saying they only try in Europe.

Like I said, a small nucleus of a point beaten into submission by ham-fisted delivery.

    It's cliche soup though.

You could argue the actual effect means they are fitter - and therefore more capable in Europe?

If there is any difference at all, where is the evidence there is more km covered per game in the EPL relative to other leagues? The number of goals etc. is pretty consistent across all the major leagues.

  4. The EPL=money thing can't really be overstated when clubs like Leicester are signing first-teamers from clubs like Inter. It's like the late 80s and early 90s when English players were ending up at clubs like Sampdoria (not even just Juventus and Milan). You have to acknowledge the role TV money is playing in squad-building when that happens. However, Barcelona and Madrid, even allowing for the recent changes to tax law in Spain, are still absolutely the top draw. There's no way the average player would go to City over Barcelona.

I'm not actually sure where Bayern fit into this equation as they don't seem to go for players from England very much.

Yeah but if Paul Pogba, say, had the chance of Bayern vs. any English club, I don't think he'd struggle to make that decision.

We're not sure what interest the likes of Videl or Alonso had but I'd be surprised if the top EPL clubs weren't considering it. Similarly, there was absolutely interest from Man Utd in Thiago and other clubs would have surely been looking at a free transfer like Lewandowski or Gotze.

Bayern don't overtly take the best players from the EPL as Real and Barca do but if they're interested in a player, he tends to end up there over somewhere else. On the flip side, do you really think Bayern were hankering for signings like Sterling or Martial? I reckon if they had wanted KDB they would have got him. Impossible to prove of course.

IMO these three clubs stand on their own podium of world football.

  5. Well the English teams are unrecognisable now compared to then but my point still stands. The league will still attract the top players and managers, as long as the money is there it will continue to prosper.

Does it currently attract the top players? Great players, yes, but the very top players play in La Liga and the Bundesliga.

The likes of Ronaldo, Suarez and Bale make the move there, whereas Real and Barca willingly send back players they no longer want.

If Barcelona were desperate to sign Aguero or Hazard do you really think they would stay at their respective clubs?

  6. Its hilarious alright. There is a definite dip in the performance in the EPL but it will be swings and roundabouts between the countries for years to come. 2008 wasn't that long ago when there was an all English final and 3 out of 4 English teams in the semi final. Wasn't that long ago when Liverpool beat Real Madrid 4-0 either!

But since then there has been an all Spanish and all German Final.

So I think 7 years is quite a long time really.

  7. Just when he was getting interviewed on BT when talking about how the English teams are struggling tactically in Europe and the comparisons to how the Italian teams are doing and he said that the Italians set up to play boring football all the time and that it was effective or words to that effect. I don't think he was joking nor do i think it is boring and can't judge because i don't watch it. My question again was about wanting to see Lazio or Fiorentina in place of Man Utd or Arsenal and what positive effect it would have and if it was a GIRUY to the English press. Wasn't wanting an argument about it or anything, i just prefer watching English teams and think 4 teams is fair in comparison to the competition they are just underperforming just now.

Currently yes, but it won't be fair if they fall below Serie A.

Arsenal are usually the fourth hangers on, and they're pretty hilarious to watch rather than enjoyable.

  8. Imagine saying that on a Monday Night Football show. Astonishing, genuinely astonishing.

It's astonishing people actually think Neville is a good pundit. He's awful, all spin and no substance.

And how many times have we seen the England team fail with players apparently too unfit to carry on playing a few extra games in the summer? Maybe it's a cultural thing.

Explored in Viallis book "The Italian Job" - maybe the English players with their culture of beer and take aways just aren't as fit?

Yeah but when you said eps teams weren't trying were you meaning in Europa or the champions league?

What I was getting at was the poster who said pleasing after last nights results - not sure why people want to see a team less from the premiership when an Italian team will go in there? The Italians (according to viali last night ) play boring football. But that aside they still have the same arrogance that the English posses anyway so I'm not sure what there is to gain seeing an English team less in the champions league !

    Where did he say this?

  9. My take on it is the media make out the premier league to be the best league in the world and in some ways it is but there is just far too much money being thrown around and a general arrogance from top four or five teams. Maybe losing a spot for CL would help bring the whole situation down to earth or the club's will spend crazy money for those three spots. Either way I think be good for the neutral fan and make us scots feel better about our own shite coefficients ranking which will hopefully improve

    Er, what?

Our coefficient ain't too bad to be honest, we've no longer overachieving massively but still doing okay. It was a very strong European campaign for Aberdeen this year, for example.

  10. Stories about people putting drugs or razor blades or whatever in Halloween sweets are some of the oldest urban myths going.

Cracked did an article on this.

Basically, it happened once in the US (one guy doing it to his own son for predictably awful reasons).

Since then it's just been BE A WEAR territory with no basis in fact.

  11. They all played in centre midfield same as Fletcher. Essien, Toure and De Jong would all be classed as "defensive" and the 3 of them are FAR FAR superior to Fletcher. Or do you want to just keep narrowing down the criteria/role until Fletcher is the only one who meets the criteria so he can be classed as the best at that? Darren Fletcher wouldn't get in the squad of any world XI ever- and that is a fact and you know it.

De Jong is a horrific shout there.

Why must Scottish fans bizarrely put their own players down? You can think Fletcher is not world class but to put fucking Nigel De Jong ahead of him?

  12. If you think weed is going to be legalised in the UK any time in the next 20 years you're a mentalist.

Well, the progress it has made towards decriminaliasation has been rapid in the US over the past 5 years and we'll follow whatever they do.

  13. Petition shot down

Got the e-mail this morning. That went just as expected.

It's funny because it's something that David Cameron admits to using.

What he must be saying is that, had the maximum 5 year prison term being slapped on 16 year old Dave this would actually have improved his life prospects. And protected society and the individual.

Can't argue with that, I'm sure he'd have done great in prison.

  14. Jesus f**k...Iain Wilson and Liam Smith's comments! I thought the Liam guy was joking about his Bentley til I clicked on his profile. What a fucking cock.

Would you accept a Bentley if it meant having that face?

    I wouldn't.....

TBF she's married. Was still at it for a while even then but it calmed down once she had a wean.

I think we're all owed lots of money now.

  15. Got a 1:1 for 3rd year Computer Networking confirmed today , delighted. Onward to fourth year :)

I've always ignore league tables for uni and so forth, everyone I spoke to about networking told me that RGU was the place to go.

Was it an RGU networking event?

Depends what you're doing to be honest, they are plenty of good reasons for going to whichever uni you end up in, it's when people go somewhere to follow their friends / burd that it will end badly.
