  1. Not sure if I posted before but I was within a couple of hundred metres of the Address hotel blaze in Dubai 18 months ago, it happened on Hogmanay very close to the Burj Khalifa firework / laser show. From first noticing the fire on the lower 2 floor balconies to it being a 20+ floor blaze took literally 2-3 mins. Cladding was the cause of speed of spread or if I'm not remembering wrongly, more to do with the epoxy that fixed the cladding? It's now unlawful to attach non fire retardant cladding and new cladding has to be retro-fitted to buildings over a certain number of floors.

  2. It is pretty damning, isn't it?

That is unbelievable, like another mentioned, it's a catalogue of concerns going back years. Surely there will be manslaughter prosecutions on individuals responsible?
Not a time for jokes but couldn't help but notice the nearby tower that caught fire was called "Adair Tower" - which immediately made me think of Red.
  3. The wider point is I support gay marriage. I believe that they should have exactly the same rights and entitlements as non gay people.
However I also respect democracy and the views of those who believe and think differently. I am not arrogant enough to believe that I and my society is right on every subject as history will inevitably show we aren't. I think that religious institutions and individuals should be free to discriminate if that is there wish, just as we should be free to discrimate against their businesses etc in response I don't think social changes should be forced upon people who don't welcome them.

It's kind of a juxtaposition to hold though?
I believe that you are genuine in your concern & affinity in regards to gay rights, but the DUP alliance & the likely dropping of the ECHR legislation in the forthcoming parliamentary term kind of makes these types of issues a central issue at present?
  4. After my but of acute pancreatitis I had a check up on Friday, which revealed that I need to have my gall bladder removed. I'm fucking falling to bits FFS!
Booked in for surgery on the 27th.

Ffs, you've got no luck (other than living in a country that sells used women's underwear in vending machines obvz) good luck.
As an aside, it's my sisters birthday on the 27th June.
  5. Apparently lighter fluid has a shitload of uses from removing rust, removing gum from hair, cleaning floors, clothing stains removal, removing sticky labels, cleaning tiles, removing skidmarks (if only) .

Any useful uses for heavier fluid? I've got an abundance of that.

  6. Is not being allowed to marry persecution? It's definitely discrimination but I'm not sure it is persecution.

Rather than pedant arguments, can you offer an answer to the wider point?
I genuinely don't know where you stand on this.
  7. First time for everything I guess! But other than a specific date sometime in the future (who knows what could happen in the next 8 hours let alone 8 years), I agree completely with that strategy, first thing to establish is the right for Holyrood to call a referendum at a time of their choosing.

  8. Of course minorities rights should be protected, as long as they don't infringe on wider societies or the greater good.

I'm perhaps picking you up wrong, in the case of say, gay marriages, are you saying that if the elected representatives stand on a platform of outlawing it & are elected, then this should be the case? By definition a minority may find it difficult to elect representatives with views more in line with their way of thinking, making the smaller the minority group you belong to, possibly open to more persecution?

  9. Except they're not been forced on the rest of society as they're elected and people continue to elect them whether you like it or not.

I agree with gay marriage. What I don't agree with is this liberal authoritarianism where a social agenda is pushed on people who don't want it.

What about, if the liberal authoritarianism is pushed to protect minorities?
