Perhaps allied to Muirhead’s confession in the tele, which may have been part of his signing discussions:
“I really hope I’m now beginning to turn a corner.
"If I am being brutally honest, I have been stuck in a rut for three years now.
“My confidence has been at an all-time low but now, after the last few weeks I now know I can still do it.
The “quality over quantity” plan we recently voted for and bought into didn’t last long and appears to have been completely abandoned. It now looks like “sparsity over quantity”, and quality has left the equation.
We now have a smaller squad, the creative side of which includes several low standard, underperforming or inconsistent players who will automatically be involved in the match day squad, regardless of how they performed in the previous game. Not the best recipe for success unless we bring in a couple of marquee signings!
I’m losing track of who we still have in the squad. As far as I can recall it’s something like:
Signed:
McLean, Strapp, Jacobs, Lyon
Unsigned:
McAdam, Ledger, Colville, Oliver, Muirhead, Blues, Omar
Development Squad:
Easdale, Hynes
The players leaving so far seem to back up the plan to have a smaller squad. Anyone staying or joining will need to be reliable and consistent as they’ll be in or around the first eleven every week. E.g., McGuffie promises to deliver but we can’t really afford to keep players who show only flashes of ability if they’re taking up one of a few shirts.
I’m sure Caley fans will hope Dodds can manage better than he can commentate, which won’t be difficult.
He must be the most boring pundit in history, closely followed by Andy Walker. All Dodds ever tells you is what just happened which we saw with our own eyes, never a hint of insight or a wee tactical gem none of us would otherwise know about. I’ll be astonished if he’s even half competent as a manager.
Gus didn’t give any real specifics away in yesterday’s interview, although he did say they want to change things and go with a tight squad. He also said there will be a lot of players coming and going over the next weeks and months. Noticeably though he didn’t mention going for quality over quantity, just wanting players who’ll do their best for Morton and themselves. Gerry seemed a bit pre-programmed when he said “I don’t want to get forensic but what are your plans. This meant Gerry couldn’t ask about certain players etc. And Gus was given a comfortable time, although he looked a wee bit edgy.
I think McAdams, Ledger, McLean, Strapp and Jacobs are all solid, steady performers we could build from, although I think only the last 3 of them are signed up. I’m also happy Reece Lyon is signed up but I hope he can channel his aggression into his football rather than winding up referees. I’d also love to see Stephen McGinn back. I’m not sure about the rest, although Gary Oliver performs better in a front two or three, certainly not up on his own. Apart from that I’d be happy with replacements.
I’m looking forward to next season with no real idea what teams will battle it out at both ends of the table, apart from a sneaking feeling it could be Dunfermline’s year.
My only downside is the number of plastic pitches as I don’t think I’ve ever seen a good football match on one.
I think you’ve nailed it there! You’ve obviously read MCT’s Business Plan which was voted in by 561 votes to 1. Would the one (VT?) like to explain why
How could he have offered McGinty a deal if he wasn’t Manager at the time? Conversely that would mean he was also involved in not busting a gut to keep Salkend or Nesbitt, plus re-signing Jacobs. Remember he persuaded McGinn a Scott Fox to join when the need was desperate and his hands were otherwise tied behind his back!
Hopkin’s strategy with The Ton seemed to be to sign a load of cheap available players and hope a percentage of them turn out to be okay. So now you would think Ayr would get the benefit of his hindsight and can cherry pick the ones that worked. Strangely though he seems to be re-signing some of his failed experiments.
It’s not my statement, though I realise I’ll get some kickback on here if we go the other way. If Gus is our new manager for instance, he seemed to favour lesser quality players such as Blues and McGinty!
