I don't think it will be that extreme, mainly because that side would get hammered and although a defeat doesn't matter he's not going to want the negative attention that would bring. QP have had a poor season but they have the firepower on their day to take a few goals off a side like that. Doesn't sound like McCabe or Aiken will be fit enough to start either so I'd imagine they'll get 30 odd minutes in 2nd half to build themselves up.

I think the starting 11 won't look too bad, it's more the finishing 11 that will look like a reserve side. Would expect Todorov, Frizz, Ballantyne all to get 45 minutes as they didn't play this week, or last week in the case of Frizz and Ballantyne. I think Hancock has looked like he needs a rest recently so would be leaving him at home.

Yeah that’s fair and probably the realistic outcome. Even with the current injuries I think there’s enough depth in the squad to rest four or five key players and still put out a competitive team and as you say, they’ve had a really poor season but Queen’s Park aren’t a bad team and every game so far has been very tight. We’ve both mentioned them before but I think the end of season Edinburgh City game will be a better comparison than the Peterhead one.

With all the loan players leaving at the end of the season only Megwa is a regular starter and with Ballantyne back to right back we will not be weakened if we can hold on to the players. Add a quality centre half and a prolific striker by paying a good wage and we go again. I'd like to see McGill back next season playing beside a quality finisher.

Any of the Dundee United team that would do the job as they rebuild for the higher league?

Not for those positions but given his agent, our habit of signing good on the ball attacking midfielders and him not being quite good enough for the top flight, Chris Mochrie makes a lot of sense.

  3. Enjoyed that performance. Thought we started well and grew into the game after the first 10 minutes and other than a couple of short spells in the second half we controlled the majority of it. There’s still that issue of not being clinical enough when we’re on top but Walton made some good saves and it’s hard to be too critical after that.

The usual suspects of Megwa, Hancock, Telfer etc all played really well and I thought Lyall had a great game too. There’s a lot to like about Lyall, he’s got a bit of dig about him and he’s very brave at taking the ball in tight areas. His decision making is really lacking and you can tell he’s not played a lot of first team football but I suppose that’s why he’s here.

I’d play a full reserve team next week, not arsed about the result if it means we can rest the usual starting 11 for the play-offs. Given it’s a game against Queen’s Park there’s every chance it just ends up 1-1 anyway.

Any other Airdrie players that might go or are part time?

Or is it now just a fully full time thing Gallagher is coming to us?

I’m not expecting many players to be released in the summer to be honest. I think Gallagher is currently the only part-time player, others like Watson have been part-time previously but I think they all moved onto full-time contracts at some point. It seems like a natural end point for everyone really, no point training in the evenings for one player if he’s not starting and best for Gallagher to move on and not be the only player in a different routine.

We've looked shaky at the back with the back 4 after our better performances with a 3/5. Megwa and Hancock at least yesterday were still trying to get down the wings but we were completely lacking cover for them when they did go forward. Ideally have Ballantyne back for play offs even if it means managing his minutes in the last 2 matches.

Looked like a back five to me yesterday until the subs, albeit a much more attacking version with McGregor at wing back. It was odd, at goal kicks we set up in a diamond with McGregor at the tip then in possession changed to a 3-5-2 with him moving out wide, Megwa moving in and Hancock bombing forward. Milne and Fitzpatrick is possibly the best left side in the league so it's a tough shift for any wing back but especially so for someone like McGregor. As you say, Ballantyne back in there with Megwa out wide gives us better balance there and a much more solid base.

I’ll reserve my full judgement on Davidson until the end of the season. Davidson joined at a period where I would have been delighted with 9th place, the team was that bad and it still needs serious surgery regardless of what league we’re in next season. An initial immediate upwards trajectory was seen when he was appointed and given the nature of the championship and ability throughout our squad, patches of poor form were still inevitable. It’s just elevated a lot more given the timing it’s came at

We’ll learn more about Davidson this time next weekend. The biggest game in the pro era against an already relegated side on horrendous form. Fail to win and questions will begin to raise and probably rightly so. I do think there’s still a distinct lack of quality in certain areas of the team and the lack of effective depth has been a consistent issue the entire season. Having to rely on a single player today (Thomas did not look fit to me, felt like he was playing through the injury) to allow a squad to play at a remotely competent level is extremely concerning and cannot continue like that in the new season as it’s simply not sustainable(also losing savoury for all of this season has been massive and it’s on beuker for not replacing him appropriately) The reliance on Thomas has been ridiculous and it’s been shown up badly in recent weeks. Summer recruitment was mental

Arbroath and hopefully a 2nd string Airdrie side to finish the season off. Take 6 points from this and I think we finish 8th (please)

I think you’ll definitely get your wish here. After today it’s pretty unlikely we’ll finish 3rd anyway and I expect like the last couple of seasons that we’ll heavily rotate in the last game. Might not be an entire reserve team but would expect Telfer, Frizzell, Todorov etc to be rested. I’ll still be predicting a 1-1 draw as always though.

Agree, whilst I'm not writing Hemfrey off, the guy needs to play more games to gain experience but at the moment I have zero confidence in him. Obviously at fault with the 2nd today and I thought he had to come and take the corner last week which Dunfermline scored from.

Any ITK's aware of our injury situation? I've seen it suggested that McStravick is definitely out for the season although I get the fact that the club may not want to announce any others.

I’d heard McStravick done his ACL, which would obviously keep him out for a long time. Real shame if true, as he was just properly coming onto a game over the last couple of months.

  9. Really poor performance in that second half but play-offs confirmed anyway thankfully.

I really enjoyed the first half, very even with two decent sides creating chances. The reaction to conceding the first goal was a concern though, heads down and lots of panicking after that with Thistle running over the top of us. I don’t want to single out people but McMaster summed it up, decent performance in the first half, moved the ball well and had another good shot but had a few really slack passes towards the end, which is unlike him.

Hopefully just a reality check after the excitement of the last few weeks. Our last four games before the play-offs last season were a draw at home to 9 man Dunfermline, conceding a late equaliser at Falkirk, a dreadful defeat at home to Queen of the South and the reserves winning at Edinburgh, only for us to put in possibly the best half of football I’ve seen from an Airdrie team in the first play-off game. If we can get Frizzell and Ballantyne back fit for them then I’ll be more confident.

Depends what bit you mean. It is undoubtedly true that teams rest players. I remember a while back quite literally playing an Under 19s team against St Johnstone before a play-off and we lost 4-0. But more recently, last year in the last game before the play-offs we rested 5 players, and most of the rest were subbed during the game. We still won, but that was against Edinburgh City who had began their decline and had nothing to play for. The year before in the last game against Peterhead we changed 10 players. We drew 1-1 at home and given the form we had been on (20 game unbeaten run) and how poor Peterhead were we'd have won that game with a full team. Neither game mattered for either team so made no difference in the end, but that's 2 managers, Murray and McCabe, who are probably going to be in these play-offs with a history of making huge changes.

If we have play-offs sealed by the last game there's no way we're playing our best 11 for the whole game. The only reason could be that we want to finish 3rd so if that's a possibility then we might, but I still don't think we would. Whether it would actually affect the scoreline is an unknown obviously, but it would make sense that it would given the size of our squad.

We went into the last day level on points with Alloa last season and could have finished 3rd or 4th but still changed the team a fair bit as you say, so I think McCabe would do the same again.

  11. Can’t say I was arsed at all about finding out the news via Arbroath but good statement from the club on Calum Gallagher. Glad his time at the club will be recognised with being inducted into the hall of fame. We barely had anyone of note in the 2010s, just a blur of mediocrity, but we’ve had plenty of guys we’ll all look fondly on since then as well as true modern day legends like Gallagher and Fordyce.

  12. That’s as good a signing as Arbroath could make for League One. I wouldn’t say he’s a particularly brilliant finisher but very intelligent, great movement in the box and has developed into a great all round striker. I’ve written a big post in the Airdrie thread so won’t repeat myself too much but Stewart and Gallagher is a great start to rebuilding this Arbroath team for League One. He’s based in Glasgow so I did wonder if he’d go to a club nearby but despite the malaise around the club and McIntyre just now, it bodes well that he’s keen to sign there.

  13. My all time favourite Airdrie player. I still think his contribution over the last five years is underrated by some, every part-time club would kill for a reliable goalscorer and he’s as good as you’ll get at League One level. It’s telling that he’s off to the biggest part-time team in the country. He has hit his ceiling this season and it feels like a natural endpoint for both parties but I wish him all the best.

Others have mentioned it but that goal at Falkirk was sensational and felt like the start of the upward trajectory we’ve been on since then. His overall game has improved loads since he joined too, going from a penalty box striker with great movement to a really solid all round striker who can drop deep and link play. Even his yearly miss from a yard out was quite comical given he scored more than enough to make up for it. I think he scored with each thigh in play-offs against Cove and Montrose too

I’m glad this has been announced before the end of the season as he deserves a good send off whenever his last game is. A true modern day Airdrie great.

Interesting looking back at the league table after the defeat at Cappielow, only seven weeks ago. Albeit with a game in hand but we’ve gained 10 points on Partick Thistle and a remarkable 18 on Morton since then.

Queen’s Park are an interesting one too. After the draw last month it felt like both teams were in a fairly similar position but where we’ve pushed on and have now all but confirmed promotion play-offs, they’ve barely picked up any points since then.

Enjoyed that tonight. I’ve missed Tannadice and East End Park as I was away so nice to finally see one of our Tuesday night away wins. The good news for everyone else is I’ll miss the next three games, hopefully we have a similarly good unbeaten run then.

Happy for people to crowdfund a trip away for me next month if this is what happens.
