I remember going to see Patrick Thistle play Hearts at Firhill some years ago. Hartley went over to the Jackie Husband stand to retrieve the ball after it went out of play. The Jags fans were giving him pelters, calling him all sorts. As he climbed back over the advertising boards at the pitch he turned around to look at them. They went into overdrive, probably because Hearts were already two or three up and strolling it. Hartley says to them, “Aye, but you paid to watch this shit, I’m getting paid for it! “

Gogic was excellent for us, so I don’t know why he couldn’t get a game for the Hibees. Maybe because Ross signed him and was sacked soon after?

At the last home game against Rangers I was in the main stand. The usual warnings were given regarding the behaviour of fans. When they started the sectarian singing, I asked the nearest member of the Police, who happened to be a senior female Police officer, if their songs were acceptable. She was wearing a headset and said she couldn’t hear the singing, although she was nearer them than me. She said it was for the Police commander in the away fans stand to determine if any action should be taken….obviously nothing happened. It might be seen as a difficult call for the Police to take action against the bigots, but why ‘warn’ them about their sectarian behaviour and then ignore it. Seems to me that the away teams should automatically be awarded the three points by the SPFL.

I remember watching a very young Spittal, I think he must have been about 18, take Clyde apart at Broadwood. I’ve always quite liked him, good passer and can be excellent at free kicks. Thistle fans were glad to see him go as they thought he was a coward! They could have done with him over the last few years.

Goodwin will sign better, and more reliable, players than those heading out of the club. He managed to bring some excellent players to St Mirren on a much smaller budget. Dons fans might not agree, but players like McGrath, Ronan, McCarthy, Gogic and dare I say big Joe, would have made them a better team. Goodwin will be aware of players in England, Ireland and further afield who will now be within his budget and he won’t be signing guys who are happy to sit on the bench earning good money. Given time, he’ll probably prove to be a success, in relative terms. Grab the cash on offer from Liverpool and let Jim replace the serial under-achievers with ‘winners’. Hope you lose on Sunday though….

I remember he scored a crucial goal against Clyde at Broadwood when the Saints went on to pip the Bully Wee to the Championship title. Hint of hand ball about it but heh ho…
