I think maybe your memory's playing tricks on you a bit mate? Miller did score against Dunfermline at Brockville in 1971 but it was in the 88th minute to make the score 3-2. Young had replaced Fergie as a substitute too. Is this game that you're meaning?

I took the above from 'Better Meddle' as I have no recollection of it whatsoever (despite the strong probability that I would have been there), so I've no idea if his goal was directly from a corner either?

I might be wrong as I was only 13. Think Andy Roxburgh may have scored the other two goals.

  2. Best goal I’ve ever seen was also by George Miller against Rangers on New Year’s Day 1971. I was in the stand enclosure with my pal between the home dug out and the Watson Street end. Falkirk got a free kick just outside the box to the right hand side as we looked at it at the Hope Street end. Rangers lined up their wall and Miller and Ferguson were apparently arguing as to who was going to take it. Culminated with Miller throwing his hands in the air and stomping off to the left in disgust. Took about 4-5 steps and turned. Ferguson slipped it to him and Miller blasted it into the net. A brilliant piece of trickery that I’ve never seen bettered. Sadly overshadowed next day with the Ibrox disaster

  3. Back in the mid 70s I used to organise the fives for staff in the Glynwed which we played at Hallglen Centre. My boss was friendly with both John Blackley and John Brownlie of Hibs and Scotland who occasionally got invited to come along. I still see John Brownlie at my bowling club and I remind him regularly as to when he took a shot when I was in goals. I don’t think I’ve ever felt pain like that in my hands and wrists since when I stupidly tried to save his effort. As people say these guys are on a completely higher level than most of us.

I played at a supporters club sixes tournament at Brockville many years back in the Elliots 3 team. Each team was assigned a Falkirk player and a policeman - it was a joint venture between the club and the Police promoting community stuff.

Well we were given Simon Stainrod, which still remains one of the highlights of my life. He wasn't arrogant or aloof , he was sound and hung about with us all day between matches. We put the copper in goals and played a 4 man defence with Simon up front. Every one of our misplaced or overhit passes he got to and controlled in a flash, it was a complete education.

I also remember we were going to play a team with Stephen Cody in the next game and Simon advised us not to hold on to the ball as Cody is an absolute maniac and will break your legs even in this.

I was the Policeman that played in goals that day, at the time I was the community Policeman for Camelon. Sure it was Brian McGinlay that refereed us that day and I remember he kept penalising me for bouncing the ball. Did you guys not all have dyed hair that day. A few months later Simon turned up at the Police Burns Supper in full Highland dress. It was held in Grangemouth town hall. Managed a chat with God that night and he signed my program with “To Big Al, the best player I have ever played with”. As you say a great guy and one of my highlights too.
