Not looked at the match thread, and just got in the house, but here are a few thoughts from today's game and going forward.

Just opinions, but Jack Ross has got to decide what to do with Tony Watt. Physical and talented as he is, playing on the left side seems a waste to me. Over and above, he's a bit of a liability, looking to be clever to gain fouls. Although internationally the rules are universal, he'll get away with more in Europe than he can in Scotland. Some of the 'fouls' on him today I was amazed weren't given, but others he embarrassed himself.

Again, and on Jack Ross, replacing two guys on the left of his defensive four for two others didn't help Watt: neither McMann nor Graham are comfortable trying to find a team mate with the ball at their feet, something Martindale worked out pre match, I'm sure.

And yet, most of the game, we seemed to concentrate on playing down the left today, until Cudjoe came on.

I think we'll get more balance at some point, and trust that Jack Ross is still learning things about the squad while also keeping players onside, but some of the problems today appeared obvious.

Might sound bad but wasn't hugely bothered about today's result, however I thought looking at the starting line up that we would win.

    Onto Thursday...

    Indeed.

Hopefully they underestimate us again at home too. I still think that was a large part of why they were so poor the first leg.

If you look over the two Tuzla legs, they won 1-0 at home and took them until midway through the second half away from home to score their second of the night/third on aggregate. Heads dropped and they stuck another couple of easy goals past them.

I just really hope that Odgaard and Bazoer are out.

  3. 9/10's all over the park except Harkes. Smith was also a bit off the pace.

Fletcher outstanding in his craft and looks 25.

Watt absolutely superb. Knows his strengths and was a total nuisance.

Levitt absolutely effortlessly class. I noticed tonight he barely speaks on the pitch, just goes about his Wizardry with minimal fuss and yet again showed we're incredibly lucky to have him.

Edwards and Mulgrew incredible. Not just physically but their positioning was top drawer.

Sibbald very clever and technically very good.

Middleton a great signing, especially happy it's a 3 year deal.

McGrath in for Harkes next week and probably Behich for Sheep, however Sheep was superb as well tonight.

    <Three weeks later>

What the f**k is Ross thinking about???

A month til the transfer window shuts. I think we've enough to get positive results against Killie, Livingston and St Mirren. I don't think anyone can say we're not stronger than last season (squad and manager wise) so let's not fret. If we're going to finish 5th or higher we can afford to be patient.

  5. I don't think Ross has prioritised signing a left back over attacking players, it's more a case of the left back being ready to sign his contract.

I don't think we should be worried by the lack of signings. The business we've done so far has been excellent and I firmly believe the budget exists to bring on another two or three quality players, otherwise we definitely wouldnt have signed a left back and instead spend the last few pennies on a midfielder.

Yeah it seems a strange one.  I said previously that a balanced squad was important but we’re about to embark on the season with some omissions whilst strengthening positions that don’t desperately require strengthening.

Personally I think it's a great signing. I think United have a list of players that they are waiting to become available and can only conclude those signings when they're told they can.

I think this is why Gogic hasnt signed. I think Utd could have secured him weeks ago but are waiting for their number one defensive midfield target to become available.

Sarcasm's a form of irony. Anyway, Goldie being poached by a bigger, richer club isn't a reason to criticise his boss. That's an absolutely wild take.

If I hire someone who bombs and I have to sack him or he walks out in the huff then that speaks to a problem. If on the other hand I bring in someone who is a great success and that success attracts attention from elsewhere then that's a shame but if it reflects on me at all then it's to my credit.

It takes a particularly twisted mindset to construe the success of Goldie as a reason to criticise Asghar.

100% agreed. You're probably the only one on here who read 'Asghar out' and took it seriously, but to be clear (and as per my last post) Asghar has been United's best employee.
