I don't believe that the old school style would work these days, agreed, but the correct balance needs to be found. You still need someone that isn't afraid to give someone a bollocking, if they deserve it and if you feel that they can react to it and not go into their shell. That's where good man management comes in I suppose.
It's a tough balance, and must be hard to stay calm as a coach when your players are just not playing as you want them to.
The bare minimum that should be asked of a manager is to organise and set out a team well, regardless of quality of player at his disposal.
As you say, other than seeing a 2 minute clip per week, I'm not in a position to comment on the quality of our squad, but there is a spine of good quality individuals in that team that, given the correct leadership and guidance, might be able to scrape us over the line.
