That wasn't the only time Matthews 'assisted' a Scottish club. In April 1940, under the special registration conditions of wartime, he was spirited into the Airdrie team to play Dundee United in the semi-final replay of the Emergency War Cup (the Scottish Cup in all but name). Though within the rules at the time it was regarded as sharp practice and reports stated that the majority of the 20,000+ crowd at Easter Road backed United as a consequence. Whatever, United won 3-1 and Matthews didn't score.

Willie Morgan looks suitably embarrassed.
All of them in those photies should, especially the Leeds guys. Cringeworthy!
Could be said such parodies are from a bygone age, but not quite - even today when a club appoints a new manager he signs a contract containing a clause that says he must be pictured holding a club scarf above his head.

Tannadice is completely rebuilt, but Dens looks the same as it did in the 60s. When was the rebuild of Dens, genuinely have no idea.
Tannadice didn't get a complete rebuild. The George Fox was opened in 1992, the East Stand (now the Eddie Thompson Stand) two years later and the Fair Play Stand in 97 (now named for Jim McLean). The Shed merely had seats installed in it in 94 and has had nothing done to it since. Apart from plastic seats replacing the original wooden ones, the L-shaped main stand is pretty much as it was when built in 1962.

No, I wasn't being ironic posting as an Arab on the Premiership page! I thought I was posting on the Photographic history of Scottish football page. The joys of being a novice on this site . . .

Couthy neeburs. Always been fascinated by aerial pics of grounds, especially when more than one is captured.
