Raving On
I'm looking to get broadband in my flat and my flatmate is after it too. Obviously it makes sense to get one connection and network but I need to know how much a router would cost and how easy it is to install. Anyone know? ALL HÚNS 'n' TIMS ARE SCUM
Easy, buy a multi-port router. The problem occurs with your Broadband contract, some companies insist that the Broadband is for one computer only. If you want more than 1 PC they charge you small business rates. So you'll need to clone the Mac address of your Network Cards.
Raving On
I see that Wanadoo offer a wireless package for a one off payment of £80. Is that pretty reasonable? BT have got a similar thing for £20 but I'm not sure if that lets you network computers.
Div
I've a Netgear wireless broadband router and it rocks You could sit multiple computers behind a firewall running NAT Olaf could you not ?

Frank Booth
I have a BT Voyager 2000 Wireless router. As well as my main PC, my son's PC and the laptop (which I'm on now) all share my 1 Megabit broadband connection. It cost £150 in March last year so will probably be cheaper now. ALL HÚNS 'n' TIMS ARE SCUM
You could sit multiple computers behind a firewall running NAT Olaf could you not ? As I remember it NAT allows many PCs inside a LAN to appear as 1 IP address to the outside world. However I was told AOL and Blueyonder go down to the OSI layer 1 level (MAC address), therefore any frame going to these ISPs will contain MAC address information. I've cloned MAC addresses for a few Blueyonder fowk I know. I've not heard of any Firewall that strips layer 1 information from a frame - but I've not done infrastructure for a few years. Laid Back Maverick
I managed to network two PCs and a Blueyonder cable modem for £32 (£18 for a Peak Cable/DSL router, and £15 for two lengths of cable) and I can connect my lap top at any point also as I have a free port. Bit of a pest to install initially as Blueyonder have a dual USB/ethernet cable modem and they install it using USB. So you have to uninstall the modem drivers, then connect it to your lan card and install the correct drivers, but after that you can set up your routing system. And the software will automatically set up your MAC address for the router. Sorted. Liam
