All the non-Old Firm teams set up with 3 centre backs now except for Hibs.

I'm not against 3 at the back if you have the right tactics to go with it but our tactics are not utilising the system. This leads to us playing people out of their normal/best positions whilst leaving some of our best players on the bench.

Oh, sure. I was just adding that out of interest rather than as a rebuttal to what you and Atlis had put.

The 3-5-2 gives teams an extra centre back and an extra centre forward over previous trends like the 4-2-3-1. That's seeing teams miss out their midfield more in build up, instead going straight from centre backs to forwards with long passes. That's been bad news for us because our best defensive players have always been our midfielders. Pittman and Holt (formerly Omeonga too) were pressing machines previously but there's been little for them to press this season because opponents are no longer building up through their midfield.

Martindale's attacking strategy has been so self-defeating. As mentioned, three centre backs can then allow for two centre forwards in a 3-5-2 which is why most teams have switched to it. Not us, though, we've used a lone striker with narrow attacking mids behind. That'd make sense if we were trying to use a more elaborate, shorter passing build up that actually utilised those attacking midfielders. We don't, though, we knock it long from the centre backs to the front line. Yet we only have one striker - and therefore only one target - instead of two, which halves the likelihood we'll be able to retain possession from these long balls.

Tonight we got a goal from a Guthrie headed knock on. Anderson later got through on goal from another Guthrie headed knock on. So that was two proper goal-scoring chances from this strategy, not bad for away to Aberdeen but certainly not great either. That we this time managed to score one of those chances might've made it look a better strategy than it is. What's frustrating is that all of Anderson, Nouble, Stephen Kelly, Pittman, Holt, Penrice and Montano are capable ball players. Martindale maybe thinks that taking the handbrake off these more creative players sacrifices defensive solidity. It doesn't. Our defensive woes earlier in the season were mostly down to him making shite player selection choices in our back line.

Hows Penrice getting on for you guys?

Does he have a settled position yet, or is he still getting moved around a bit?

Our player of the season so far (in a very bad season so less competition than normal) and he plays left wing back. It's probably that tactical consistency he's finally enjoying, he's now a definite starter and plays the same position each match, that has allowed him to hit such good form. He's first choice now ahead of Cristian Montano which tells you a lot as Montano was excellent for the last two seasons and remains one of our better players.

Penrice has an impeccable first touch. His crossing is superb. Dribbling isn't a particular strength but he can certainly keep the ball no problem and goes on the occasional run. Offers a goal threat with his shooting and movement in the final third. Defensively he has great recovery pace meaning he's rarely beaten when one on one against opposition wingers. Snappy tackler.

Martindale saying he needs more money in the post match. How much has he and Ward invested in Livi FC?

He said that to be able to bring any new players in he needs to be able to move players out first. He then specified its particularly centre backs in the current squad he's most keen to move on and then its forwards he wants to bring in.

On another note guys, that naesayer Virgin Guerin has lost his mind over LFC,pleasing beyond anything we could have ever dreamt off  !!

Let him keep the hate coming,we must have been doing something right for to attract his level of paranoia and outright hatred towards us ...........

Be under no doubt, since the move from the east end of Edinburgh we have by and large made our presence felt in the SPFL.

2 League Cup finals,2 Challenge Cup finals.

Scottish Cup semi-finalists.

Won all 3 lower league's.

European football.

Premiership football.

Downside has been 2 admins,as 1 charlatan after an other has tried their hand wae us.

Cracking wee player. Always seems to be on his bike when someone lifts their head in midfield, too.

Really encouraging last 3 performances. Decent enough at the back and even a goal last night! Anyone who thinks we are in a bigger hole if we don’t go to Celtic Park and win (or draw) just isn’t being realistic IMO. Need that one out the way without too much damage. Tricky us having played away midweek and a rested Celtic at home after a defeat but we have to keep going and block out the noise.

Yep, Aberdeen and Celtic away are venues we don't usually get anything, even when we're on a run of good form. St Johnstone wont be an easy game either right enough, they've picked up since Avril came in, but it's at home, and we have to be taking something from our home games. Another 3 home league games in January too, if we don't take at least 7 pts from those 4 home games we're not going to be getting off the bottom of the league.

Hopefully this new signing RWB will help balance up the wings and Anderson gets starting games, bringing him on for 20 mins is doing nobody (except the opposition) any good.

In his last two match reviews, Martindale has criticised Anderson for missing chances. Mentality comes into that, though, and a player coming on as a sub desperate to make an impression is going to be snatching at chances and lacking composure. Confidence comes from regular starts and Anderson should be a nailed down starter. The standard Martindale holds him to is unfairly high. Ironically, the next match away to Celtic is such a pointless shift for whoever we play up front that I'm fine with Anderson being rested for it. Let Guthrie do the donkey work with that one. Anderson must start the St Johnstone, Motherwell and Hearts matches, though.

Will Teto ever pull on a Livi shirt in the New Year?

You really wonder why Martindale signed a player that he couldn't play?

he talked about moving players on in January in his Aberdeen post match interview but yet there are players in the building that can't even play for the club that are getting paid.  Thats just madness..

Agree with a lot of what is being said here. if this new lad is RWB, what's the chances of seeing Penners and Montano on the pitch same time? Could Penrice just be moved up the wing a bit? He's got some guile about him, I personally think his best is yet to come and in a more attacking position...

Every year we take a gamble on players coming in, we look for hidden gems or youngsters about to break through, and often we get duds. Sometimes we don't. Not sure what the logic is behind all the signings that have ever taken place, but I know this 'gamble' strategy can pay off. This season maybe not so much. We need to move certain players on and use the budget to get some serious firepower and attacking mentality into the team. Head Coach still needed imo...
