Guest stevemac
Once again the Tartan Army embarass Scotland. The abuse that Berti Vogts received last night and the blatant racism in the tabloid press this morning are a sad indictment on our country and its people. Whether or not you agree that Berti is the man for the job or not, these drunken morons have no right to subject the man to this kind of abuse. He is a decent guy who is working hard at a nigh on impossible job. Barry Fergsuons comments last night night were spot on. If I was Barry, or indeed any other Scotland player, I would disassociate myself immediatly with anything to do with this national team and its bigoted support. Christ, we go on about the English supporters! They are in no way as bad as the type of drunkards who follow Scotland. No doubt they will say that it is there right to criticise in such a manner. However, with rights there comes responsibilities!
H_B
Absolute rubbish and a serious allegation. What specific examples of racism would you like to highlight here Steve?

When they won the fair play award in Sweden? When they were handed the freedom of Bordeaux by the city councillors? When they handed over £2000 to the Outreach charity in Moldova on Tuesday? (something they do wherever they go by the way!) I'll tell you what, why don't you piss-off to England and support them, you deserve each other. Guest Tomsk The Beano
"berti get to f**k" "one gordon strachan" How is that racist? The only embarrasing thing i saw last night was the single worst performance and result it's ever been my misfortune to see whilst following Scotland for over 25 years. Ric
Considering we don't actually know what the abuse was, although we can guess, what did Berti expect sitting in the crowd? He is sitting amongst men who have probably spent the majority of their savings, travelled 1000's of miles to a country that is on the edge of a warzone, to follow a team they have followed for years and a team he is slowly but surely putting into a quagmire. The Tartan Army has been loyal to the team, they have turned out in numbers, in all weathers, in all locations and put out a possitive (if drunken) image of Scot's abroad. Berti doesn't seem to understand the mentality of Scots. We will accept defeat, poor squads, bad luck, etc, etc and still march on with beer and a laugh. What we will not accept is a poorly organised and poorly motivated team.
H_B
Quite a few of the guys I work with have (seriously) been suggesting the media's treatment of Vogts has been racist, citing the Daily Record's offer of a one-way flight home as evidence. Whilst not wishing to defend anything that rag would do, I dont think Scotland fans care much if the manager is Martian (though perhaps not English!) as long as we do OK. Ric
Heh... I think we will all agree that the "mass media" whether it is home grown red tops (a la Daily Record) or the southern wolf in sheeps clothing (the 'Scottish' Sun) do nothing more than aim for the jugular to get the most response, and sales, as possible. This is why you have people like Jim Traynor or Gerry McNee spouting there own brand of pish. It angers people, polarises the discussion and in the end raises their profile. H_B
I agree. Both of those papers and their shoddy journalists rely on the stupidity of Old Firm fans (which has no limit) to keep them going.

Sadly, with the payoff he is going to have to get, he can afford to buy his own Lear Jet to get him home in comfort

Guest Insight
Why have any sympathy for boys spending a lot of money to go over and watch that pish - dont quite follow that arguement. Firstly, they knew it would be shite. Secondly, they are obviously thick as f**k following scotland and can afford to blow their money! Tell you an embarrasing incident - a drunken scot in the REP after a friendly a couple of years back gets up on a bin and recites the Braveheart speech - what a fanny and an embarrassment to us all. PS - singing the Flower of Scotland is pathetic and quite possibly racist.

Singing God Save the Queen is pathetic and quite possibly racist. However, i (1) Don't look for sympathy for travelling (2) Dundee have won a number of trophies in their time (5 in total) (3) Don't have to get a plane to the borders of Russia to support them then sing drunken songs at the manager to get him fired (4) We are the most succesful team in our city which is always fun when speaking to rivals. I agree 100% that singing GSTQ could be racist but i thought we were talking about Scotland and not England/N Ireland's anthem
Ric
PS - singing the Flower of Scotland is pathetic and quite possibly racist. You are entitled to think what you wish about the song, but the lyrics are not racist. If you don't believe me, go look for yourself - especially the third verse. I don't go with the rest of your argument Insight, and as your reputation from the SPL board preceeds you, I think you are probably on the windup. But just in case you genuinely believe the pish you are spouting, let me answer you.. I am not saying have sympathy for those people travelling, I am saying that if they are willing to have that loyalty it's only to be expected that they will voice their opinion on the matter. Put it another way, if you were to travel to Eastern Europe to support Dundee then the manager put out a poorly organised and motivated squad, then sat amongst the fans, would you not be willing to point out a few "home truths" to him? As for the boy doing the Braveheart speech, yes I will agree that is embarrassing, however that (as you said yourself) was a few years ago and was probably more topical. At the Norway match when they fed the speech through the tannoy (over a proclaimers song) all I saw were heads shaking at it being so poor. I don't think you will find many spouting that Holloywood influenced crap now. You do seem to mention that incident on a regular basis, have you only ever been to one Scotland game?
