Bumpity bump.

As I am staring economic inviability in the chops, I'm putting feelers out for a new job. First time I've really thrown myself into this for a few years so a couple of questions:

- If asked to state a desired salary is it better to overstate than understate? I'm not going to demand Fred Goodwin's pension but I have put that it would take me slightly more thanmy current salary to go somewhere. I've been told that I'm underpaid for the job I do (an experienced colleague told me she'd pay me around £20,000 more than my current salary, sadly she isn't recruiting).

- What's the best website for IT jobs in Scotland?

- What are the best agencies for IT jobs? If/when I'm made redundant I'm going get onto an agency. I can't really do it now as I know agencies like people to start asap and I can't offer that, unless I forgo redundancy payments, which isn't likely.

I'm on my way out of the navy and attended a career transition workshop recently. Helps turning people back into civvies again.

On the topic of salary we were told to write words such as open for discussion/negotiable on application forms and when at interviews use phrases such as a competitive package in line with other colleagues and rival companies.

Can't help with IT websites or that. But I would imagine job sites such as jobsite/monster/Carlton resources would be able to help. Also myjobscotland is quite a good website for local authority jobs.

Agree that it's best not to give a number. Have seen people do that, then worry about having undersold themselves if they get that offer. Have also been on the other side of interviews and I've no problem with people saying "prefer not to give a number but looking for something more than I'm on/something at the competitive end of market rates".

ICTChris - they will want to know what you're getting now, so if you feel that's undervaluing you then tell them but make it clear you feel that's low (with strong reasons why) so they don't think that they just need to offer the same as what you are/were on.

From my experience, the best thing is to be business like - it's a business negotiation you're entering. I persuaded my now employer to change my work location by showing them the hit to my disposable income if I had to commute - I deliberately didn't put it as an ultimatum to keep my options open and avoid pissing anyone off.

The disappointment when you get to the Chinese border, hand over a massive pile of notes and get a couple (if that) back in return. :(

Saying that, it's the opposite when I win at the bookies as I'll give them a few quid to make it up to the next note. Walking out with the one £20 note feels better than leaving with £17.42 in wee notes and change.

Scottish and Southern are taking applications for their electrical, gas and mechanical apprenticeships which start in August. Closes 15th of next month I believe.
