Every department in France has a number. Most prevalent on their car number plates and Corsica has 2 governing departments but as an island as an island share one number although it can be written with a letter to differentiate between them. Most of the other islands due to their population I assume have one number for instance Reunion is 974. You might see some reference to it tonight in the opening ceremony? Edited July 26 by 101 ETA this is what I have assumed maybe someone from France can confirm

What Adam @101 says. I only know because of the Tour de France - when they go into a new department (region) it will usually flash up a graphic with the department name and the number in brackets. Anyway, a super smashing TEN to end the week.
