Or maybe more likely, something you're not doing in terms of injury prevention? I know you've got a part-time squad but maybe they should have a strength and conditioning program to do at home? Your situation seems so bad there's surely more to it than bad luck or coincidence. Best of luck going forward! Training under the previous management was awful even for a part time team, at best an hour on the park and little to no real training, just shape work and shooting. Trying to compete with full times has always been a struggle, as you can imagine, DC, Pink and Big Rab are not exactly building up peoples fitness levels etc. No real injury prevention happens, and recently advertised for a Physio on Instagram, which is laughable. Coupled with the fact the the previous management didnt understand squad rotation, keeping players match fit and that type of thing, various people left with no minutes for 6 weeks at a time, to me it seems like mismanagement on all of the above has caused all of these problems. But our own fans really do think its down to ( bad luck ) Were a part time club, previous regime treated it as such and were always going to struggle fitness-wise. We dont have a reserve team or anything to keep bodies fit, and play St Johnstone in about 8 bounce games per season to try and get minutes in legs now and then, but its a bit of a farce in all honesty .

We have never struggled for fitness in previous Championship seasons and have had remarkably few injuries so I don’t agree with your analysis.

Agree. It was commented on many times during our successful spells in the Championship. We matched the full time teams for fitness. It seems like our luck has just run out this season.

Yup Just now, Velvet Donkey said: The argument seems fairly compelling to me. Are you dismissing the element of luck during the successful season? Nope That was a pretty normal season though - I am not looking back but remember at the time having to point out that we’d suffered injuries and suspensions like other clubs had that year too (obviously not to this extent) - it was a fairly normal season Is there any team in the league that anyone can think of that has had to put a goalkeeper on upfront because of how bad their injury situation was - I can’t think of it What about a team in the league that has had 10/11/12/13 players out injured - can’t think of that either, Dundee United would struggle with that It is January now and we’ve signed 5 outfield players - one managed a full game before being carried off on a stretcher half way through the second game - one lasted 7 minutes before being substituted off and that’s all he’s played - one managed a game and then has been struggling with a Hamstring problem and been in and out the team and subbed last night at half time Signing these guys to come in and help the situation out and it’s just made it worse - it’s given us a huge squad but with the same amount and percentage of the squad - roughly 50 percent still out injured It is fkn crazy
keptie
4 minutes ago, Velvet Donkey said: The argument seems fairly compelling to me. Are you dismissing the element of luck during the successful season? We had seven successful seasons under the Campbells without any injury issues, in fact we were the fittest part time team out there. Nobody was suggesting luck wasn't involved in our ridiculously good season. no idea what that has to do with anything tbh. Bad luck happens and we're having a good dose now
DUAFC
Injuries occurred in 6, 12, 8 and 9 mins in the last few games. Either players are being rushed back, which is understandable in light of the injury list. Or something else ?
ExiledLichtie
I don't agree with the criticism of the previous management's training. Fitness was never a problem, and we suffered very few injuries. I think what started this off were the defensive injuries, and they were not muscle based. Hamilton did a hamstring (iirc), and Little rolled his ankle. As a result, players like ToB and Steele were probably playing when they shouldnt have been due to lack of numbers in defence (100% a criticism of the management), players were adapting to unfamiliar positions, and new signings were being dropped straight into the team. Its all snowballed from there.
timlichtie
Good fortune combined with good recruitment absolutely played a massive part in our successful spells. Who could have imagined that guys like ToB, Ricky, Hammy and Thomo would turn out week after week without as much as a minor injury. The mistake was to imagine that the injury free run would continue indefinitely. Lots of us could see this coming, just not to this ridiculous extent.
Velvet Donkey
It's certainly a brutal injury list. You can't mitigate or plan for that very easily.

Another wild, crazy post, this is the first season we have really struggled with injuries, its a freak season, I would imagine we could look towards our physio situation, type of training, amount of training etc but it genuinely seems a freak for me. Injuries seem to have got even worse recently so cant be blamed on either management team. The past few seasons I actually think our fitness, intensity and general work ethic was a major part in where we finished in the league. I know for a fact that we have played quite a few bounce games against all sorts of opposition and would think McIntyre will continue this when everyone is back fit so the point about st johnstone is just made up nonsense. We're not some two bob outfit like you make it, club is run very professionally.

1320Lichtie
At this point I feel like all I want is a normal year where we’ve got a half decent solid squad - for the budget we have that should be easy and the minimum - regardless of the league I’m absolutely fed up of all the shit we’ve had the last 2 years. Last year was a whole different thing I know but it was still a total shambles for other reasons We had that brief spell of hope and then Inverness appointed big Dunc and we went off the rails - the wee run following that kind of started to solidify everyone’s thoughts from last season in that DC had us going backwards and everything been going against us since with results and the management change and the injuries Continually fire fighting and it’s so tiring - was in a miserable mood last night thinking about it all Edited January 24 by 1320Lichtie
kentish
One small glimmer of hope is after Morton a three week recovery gap, then effectively I feel the next two 6 pointers v queens and Inverness go a long way to deciding our fate...fail to win minimum one of these I see no way out...win both well it'll be back in the mix. Its not over yet but it feels like hurdles and fences are appearing in a flat race week after week currently.

We're not some two bob outfit like you make it, club is run very professionally. 1. Its not really crazy and wild is it? 2. You most definitely have to look at the physio, type of training and amount of training, noone is blaming the new management, the old management did not train well at all. We didnt have a physio, id assume no other real specialists in injury rehab or prevention, but im the crazy and wild one for suggesting this, even though its all true. 3. Last season this intensity and work ethic nearly took us down, so what's your point? More of the same? if your referring to the 1st half of the 21/22 season, sadly that was 2.5 years ago, we have spent that last 2.5 years being pumped on a regular basis. And you are happy for that to continue, because we are run professionally ( and im crazy and wild ) 4. The point about St Johnstone isnt nonsense though is it? If your in the know, go and ask anyone how many times we have played St Johnstone over the last few seasons in bounce games. You wont though will you? But just to clear things up, given we train in perth, and St Johnstone are from perth, it would make perfect sense for that to be a viable bounce game which is why St Johnstone regularly play us in bouce games. Im not saying its the only team, but it has been regular. 5. No-one said we are a two bob outfit at all, we are playing in a league full of full time teams, and our training has been poor under DC hence why people will speculate that this may have played a part in the injury crisis. Im sure the board and folks at the club are trying to run the club within their means, and budgets and doing all they can be as professional as possible. But i think only one of us is crazy and wild, and its no me.

Arbroath are always lauded as the best run part time club in the country. Might be true. However, they got pretty lucky during covid as every championship team got £500k in grants no matter their budget which, as a part time team, helped massively. They also got left money in a will which specified must be spent on their stadium which allowed you to extend your main stand which increased your commercial income. Obviously had the season which you almost got promoted from which increased season tickets and sponsorship etc. So all of this combined has allowed them to almost punch above your weight albeit you are probably at your current level. Obviously your injury crisis is pretty bad but it does make you question whether there should be rules about having some youth players which Arbroath have not bothered to invest in (as far as I know). Financial fair play doesn’t seem to be a thing in the lower leagues of Scottish football (that is not a dig at Arbroath alone)
