The Storms & Severe Weather Thread

Am I right in thinking that if you count from when you see lightning, to when you hear thunder, that is how far away in miles approximately the eye of the storm is? Or is that an urban myth?

Close but not quite. Apparently you need to divide the number of seconds between thunder and lightning by 5.

Well there you go. So when I nearly shat myself this morning (actually I did, but I was on the toilet at the time) the storm was a fifth closer than I thought it was. You learn something every day.

Weathers proper kicked off the last 7 hours. Woke me up last night too. 2 good days and this is what we have to suffer for it

Clearing up in Glasgow now, rain seems to have stopped and the rain radar suggests that's it**. Shame I missed the most of it sleeping, woke up with some thunder but didn't seen any lightning this morning. Was a bit better last night and a few bits of sheet lightning but nothing as adverse as I'd like it to be.

**edit- nah, it's not. FlyerTon posted it as it was at 07:45. Looking like another hour of rain but no lightning :(
