National Insurance Number

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of applying for a job just now, was wondering if the P&B masses could help me out.

The problem is, I have to provide evidence of my National Insurance number and they won't accept my payslip as it isn't an original document issued by my employer. My payslips are received online in PDF format so I thought it would be okay to print this off and send it to them but apparently not. My N.I. card has been lost for years and, having checked HMRC, it appears replacement cards aren't issued.

The e-mail I have from my prospective employer says that they will accept a letter from HMRC or DWP with my N.I. number on it but I can't think of anything I have with this on it.

If anyone out there has anything to suggest I'd be delighted, cheers!

If you've been in employment for over a year then you get your annual P60 which should be more than adequate.

Seems a bit weird that they ask for proof of your NI number, I worked for the DWP in the past and they sure as hell didn't ask me for anything like that.

Just as well though as I haven't seen my card in over 15 years! :unsure2:

If you write to HMRC about say, your NIC contributions, and quote your NI number, they will (eventually) write back, quoting your number. This might not be quick enough for your purpose, unfortunately.

I had a similar problem with the HMRC - i had got a UTR number years before under recommendation of co workers but never needed it until the summer when i was working in Edinburgh. Obviously i had lost my number and couldn't get my parents to find it so had to get on the phone to them to get a replacement, took about an hour on the phone then went through the steps they said they were sending it out and it should be within 2 weeks, 2 weeks past and still no reminder so phoned them again and they said it may take another 2 weeks after another hour long wait on the phone. Then i finally got it but for the first 4 weeks of work i was on emergency tax code. Get to claim it back mind you but by f**k they're awful

You could try nipping into the dole office with a Passport/Driving license and ask them to do you an official letter. They have to spend all their time fucking up peoples' lives at the mo, so they might quite like a break.

Go to your payroll and ask for a copy of the letter they received to change your tax code in April. They will have an electronic copy to adjust your tax code as most folks changed to 1000l then etc.

You don't get to claim rebates back they just add it on your next wage or that's what they told me when they put me on a emergency code for no reason.

I was told by co workers and my mrs who does tax returns that i can claim it back in April and get it all back as it was just a summer job and i didn't earn over 7 grand in the fiscal year

P45, P60 or shit like that.

Some employers these days are asking for a full 5 year work history, and want people to account for periods between jobs - the local Jobcentre can give you a 'confirmation of benefits' letter, which will list periods when you were claiming benefits - any letter from those cats ought to include your NI number.

Good luck with the job hunting, bubba!

Ah right I had a permanent job so it was just added on to my next wage. How can you live off less than 7k?
