Shotgun Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 They apparently named the RAF ones after characters in the Magic Roundabout, which means there probably was one called Ermintrude I've had a not particularly good day today and this snippet of information cheered me up considerably. Thanks.
FlyerTon Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 The Yanks have already started to replace their ageing maritime patrol aircraft with the new Boeing P-8 Poseidon. They will eventually have 122 of them. India ordered eight of these planes and have received six of these so far. Australia also to order eight with the option of four more. A P-8 with the older P-3 behind.
Silvio Tattiescone Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 It's rumoured we'll be getting the P8 too, just that the Tories are delaying as long as possible. The Japanese have probably the best new MPA around but with our tongues so far up the Yanks arses, I doubt we actually want the most capable aircraft.
Ned Nederlander Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Ahem. You just accused the RAF of taking credit from the Royal Navy's work. Isn't SOSUS an american system which they've decided to give the royal navy data from? I pointed out that our Anti-Submarine capability has consisted of more than RAF Nimrods (and Shackleton's) over the years.
rustyarabnuts Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I vaguely remember back in the earlie '80's ,there was avariant of the nimrod with a huge extension on it's nose, meant to be full of state of the art radar but as the crabs couldnt afford the equipment, it was filled with concrete !! ETA

ETA nimrod.jpg DId you read the article on the BBC about the Tornado fleet. They have something like 132 Tornadoes (can't remember the exact number) of which 16 are designated 'Diamond Fleet'. An aircraft that is designated 'Diamond Fleet' is one that is fully equipped and actually working. Diamond Fleet!
Ned Nederlander Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Crabs. Now theres a term I havent heard in a long time! How about 'Bootneck' or 'Percy Pongo'?

The Young Young Diamond Fleet are the mental ones though.

ETA nimrod.jpg You have merged 2 stories into one here mate, but both of them do have a bit of truth in them. The aircraft pictured was a trial aircraft to fill the AEW role, it never made it into service as the E-3D won the contract (the AWACS - the one with the mushroom on top). The concrete story relates to the 'canoe' on top of the tail plane which used to have a bit of kit in it which was removed due to being replaced with something better. Instead of re modding the aircraft and doing loads of work on moving dealing with the change in the centre of gravity it was simply filled with the same weight of concrete. Common practice in aviation.
Black Dug Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Remind me not to sign the Official Secrets Act........what the fcuk is the point! The point is to keep secrets secret, not to forbid talking about stuff that is widely available from open sources. The US Navy even published a paper on SOSUS....http://www.navy.mil/navydata/cno/n87/usw/issue_25/sosus.htm
Big Rider Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 So are we getting invaded then? Who is it this time, the Iranians, North Koreans or Icelanders?
supermik Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I for one welcome our submerged invaders. I may even pay homage to them later whilst I am submerged in my annual bath. I might have a torpedo w**k in their honour.
Silvio Tattiescone Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 The early Tornado fighters were ready before the radar so the nosecone had a cement counterweight fitted. I believe it was known as the Blue Circle radar system.

Hedgecutter Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 So are we getting invaded then? Who is it this time, the Iranians, North Koreans or Icelanders? Neo-Vikings. They want the islands back and already started their attack this summer: http://www.stornowaygazette.co.uk/news/local-headlines/theft-from-island-church-1-3440323
