Foreign submarine spotted in Scottish waters

They apparently named the RAF ones after characters in the Magic Roundabout, which means there probably was one called Ermintrude

I've had a not particularly good day today and this snippet of information cheered me up considerably. Thanks.

The Yanks have already started to replace their ageing maritime patrol aircraft with the new Boeing P-8 Poseidon. They will eventually have 122 of them.

India ordered eight of these planes and have received six of these so far. Australia also to order eight with the option of four more.

A P-8 with the older P-3 behind.

It's rumoured we'll be getting the P8 too, just that the Tories are delaying as long as possible.

The Japanese have probably the best new MPA around but with our tongues so far up the Yanks arses, I doubt we actually want the most capable aircraft.

Ahem.

You just accused the RAF of taking credit from the Royal Navy's work.

Isn't SOSUS an american system which they've decided to give the royal navy data from?

I pointed out that our Anti-Submarine capability has consisted of more than RAF Nimrods (and Shackleton's) over the years.

I vaguely remember back in the earlie '80's ,there was avariant of the nimrod with a huge extension on it's nose,

meant to be full of state of the art radar but as the crabs couldnt afford the equipment, it was filled with concrete !!

DId you read the article on the BBC about the Tornado fleet. They have something like 132 Tornadoes (can't remember the exact number) of which 16 are designated 'Diamond Fleet'.

An aircraft that is designated 'Diamond Fleet' is one that is fully equipped and actually working.

Diamond Fleet!

I think I've seen their mentions up on walls.

The Young Young Diamond Fleet are the mental ones though.

You have merged 2 stories into one here mate, but both of them do have a bit of truth in them. The aircraft pictured was a trial aircraft to fill the AEW role, it never made it into service as the E-3D won the contract (the AWACS - the one with the mushroom on top). The concrete story relates to the 'canoe' on top of the tail plane which used to have a bit of kit in it which was removed due to being replaced with something better. Instead of re modding the aircraft and doing loads of work on moving dealing with the change in the centre of gravity it was simply filled with the same weight of concrete. Common practice in aviation.

I for one welcome our submerged invaders. I may even pay homage to them later whilst I am submerged in my annual bath. I might have a torpedo w**k in their honour. :o

The early Tornado fighters were ready before the radar so the nosecone had a cement counterweight fitted. I believe it was known as the Blue Circle radar system.
