US - Cuba relations

In the last hour Obama has announced a thaw in the relations between Cuba and the US.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-30516740

  • Reviewing the designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism
  • Easing a travel ban for US citizens
  • Easing financial restrictions
  • Increasing telecommunications links
  • Efforts to lift the 54-year-old trade embargo

It will be interested to see how this allows Cuba to develop. Will the greater economic ties allow Cuba to develop and strengthen the regime or will the greater freedom see a crumbling of the Communist state?

The policy was understandable for the time, but it is decades out of date, and has clearly failed. The problem with the whole Cuba is a dictatorship argument, is that defenders always jump onto the fact it has all these blockades and sanctions against it. I still believe it will remain a dictatorship even after blockades and sanctions are lifted, but at least it will put the proponents on the back foot. The most destructive element of it all, is that America uses its reserve currency status to threaten sanctions on anyone else who tries to do trade with Cuba.

There was a good section about the US and Cuba on the programme Last Week tonight with John Oliver a couple of months ago. I think it's on YouTube but can't post link at the mo.

You're no good then

It's long overdue that the United States ceased their petty, vindictive and downright hypocritical treatment of Cuba - good enough for them to have a base in to torture "suspects" out of sight from the rest of the world, but too evil to allow Joe Public to visit for holibags without running the risk of being banned from entry to the USA ever again.

Confirmed that the US will also open an embassy. Well done Obama, and also to Pope Frankie who appears to have had a hand in matters on the quiet.

I hope they take up cricket. The Windies could do with some extra talent.

Apparantly a block of the surviving French and Dutch West Indies islands intend joining the confederation shortly so their pool to pick from looks set to increase. With luck there'll be a new breed of West Indies demon bowlers to give BBC news readers & Norman Tebbit petted lips.
