Conference No More

Bit of a strange one, but the Football Conference has decided to rename itself the National League. It will continue to operate in its current format of a national division and two regional ones (!), which will be called respectively the National League, the National League North and the National League South. Which seems a contradiction in terms, but there you go... so did the SPFL renaming.

Also seems a bit underwhelming, at least the phrase "Football Conference" is instantly recognisable. Whereas "National League" could mean anyone.

Also announced a new logo to go with it.

Does anyone care?

Evidently you do, since you have posted in the thread. :whistle

My guess is the reason they've done this is because people still unconsciously think of it as the Vauxhall Conference, even almost two decades since they last sponsored it, except for that short spell where it had the funky title of Blue Square Premier which made it sound like a lager.

I preferred the original name of the Alliance Premier League.

I reckon your bang on the nail re the Vauxhall Conference thing. Bit like up here when folk still called the Youth Cup the BP Cup years after they stopped sponsoring it.

Seem to be doing a much better job than the retards at the SPFL. Long term tv future sorted, sponsor sorted, long term online internet streaming plans.

Its much of a challenge to be better organised than the SPFL.

Is it just coincidence that the Sunday name for the English pyramid (below the Football League) is The National League System?

I think you've nailed it there.

Odd move, though, given that the Conference name is widely known amongst football fans.

Hi Stewart

I've just had another brilliant idea to advance Scottish football following the outstanding success we had with the Scottish Premiership re-brand.

Lets call the Highland and Lowland Leagues National League North and National League South. I think it might work best if the Highland League became National League North but I'm flexible about this. It's brilliant though. I don't how I keep coming up with all these ideas.

See you at the lodge for lunch. WATP.

Neil.

Seems more money being put into the league and promoted much more. The TV deals (without knowing the figures look good)

Brian Barwick is also taken over as league chairman

Would hope for an extra promotion place up to the league (Not that Aldershot will threaten the upper reaches any time soon :() 2 automatic and 1 play off would be nice.

  • 4 weeks later...

Pitch invasion fans should switch over to BT Sport 1. Bristol Rovers v Forest Green Rovers in the play off semis and Bristol are leading 2-0 on aggregate. Stadium looks great with so many people packed into it. Just 10 minutes left to play.

Very disappointing, no pitch invasion.
