Scottish Football's Most Dramatic Turnarounds

Recommended Posts

During the first 24 games of this season, Ross County picked up 12 from a possible 72 points, winning twice and drawing 6 times. Their best run of form during that spell saw them earn 8 points from 6 games, and they picked up just 4 points from the final 11 of these 24 games. Then, as most of you are well aware, they started a run which couldn't have contrasted more dramatically: 7 wins and a draw, 22 from a possible 24 points, and counting. The contrast is just ridiculous. This thread is not to discuss when County's run might end / whether they will stay up, but other dramatic turnarounds in the history of Scottish football, whether the change in fortune spans just 90 minutes or a decade.

A trio of other which come to my mind:

  1. Hibs last season. Not as dramatic a contrast as County's change in form this season, but incredible nonetheless.

  1. A Scottish Cup game in the region of 15 years ago, between ICT and Ayr United in Inverness, if my memory serves me correctly. Ayr up 3-0 at half time, final score ICT 4-3 Ayr.

  2. And before any St J fans get in (yawn): Richard Brittain, and all that.

Over to you lot, you tremendous people.

We were 6 points behind Rangers (RIP) in 2008 and they had three games in hand over us in mid April, the 2-1 win a week or so later aginst them with THAT screamer from Nakamura and an injury time winner from JVOH was the catalyst for our comeback, aided by a monumental collapse from them, culminating in memorable scenes at Tannadice on Tommy Burns Thursday

Remember Darcheville saying they'd put six past Aberdeen that night?

The greatest turnaround in Scottish football history IMO:

Losing 0-3 in Germany in our first ever European match, before returning to Rugby Park and losing a goal in the opening minutes. 4-0 down on aggregate, and we go on to score five without further reply. Going through at the expense of the team that lost to Real Madrid in a European Cup Final a few years back.

Morton's collapse in 2003-2004

Was about to post that one. Snigger.

May 12, 2001: We're 2-1 up on Aberdeen at half-time, Dundee United are 2-0 down to St Johnstone. Would bring the gap between us to a point with a game to go. We hold out to win but United turn things round with a little assistance to all but relegate us.

May 12, 2007: We're 1-0 down to Motherwell at half-time, Dunfermline are 1-0 up. It would put them ahead of us with one game left. Motherwell go 2-0 up, subs Sutton and Mehmet bang in some goals to bring us level and Caley equalise with Dunfermline. Sutton scores again to spark scenes (before the word scenes was used as often) and Caley Thistle score a last minute winner to keep us safe.

Weird how it was the same date six years apart.

That Motherwell - Hibs game was something else. I was sitting through a dour 0-0 draw with St Mirren and kept on hearing of the goals going in which was more exciting than the match itself.

Greg Stewart scoring a last gasp winner. Incredible.

That's mental. Never say die.

Not "on theme", but the Edinburgh derby that was 2-2 after 89(?) minutes and finished 4-4 another which shows just how much can happen in a matter of minutes.

There was a Highland Derby in Inverness once, where 4 goals were scored in a 6 minute spell - the first 3 by ICT. County went on to draw that one from 3-0 down (in the second half?), incidentally.
