Socks
As one of the many activities tking place under the new Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust, I'm making a start on getting some of the statistical information we have lying around collated and stored in a proper online database. One thing that came to me as I was looking at some past games was that I wasn't sure of the convention for dealing with abandoned matches when it comes to player appearances. Abandoned games are always a bit odd in that any bookings do count but obviously the result doesn't usually stand. It would seem a bit odd to count a booking received in a game that wasn't counted for statistical purposes! I'm sure there's a few folk who visit this forum who are interested in football stats generally - what are your views regarding whether or abandoned games should count towards a player's appearance total? HibeeJibee
I think a common style, and one which I personally would adhere to, is to divide games into 'First Class', 'Second Class' & 'Others', or something along those lines. 'First Class' are your League, Play-offs, Scottish Cup, League Cup, European matches and other competitions like the Challenge Cup and Drybrough Cup. 'Second Class' are your Fife Cup, Weymss Cup and minor tournaments. 'Others' would be the friendlies, abandoned/annulled games, etc.
Socks
Thanks, yes, that's one sensible possibility although it doesn't seem quite right to me to categorise alongside friendlies (and that's before I even think about trying to get hold of team lines for friendlies...). However, I guess they're not going to fit perfectly wherever they go. Usually there is a single figure quoted for a player which I guess would be what you put as first class games - is the convention to include abandoned games in that? For example, does Peter Shilton's 1005 game include abandonments or not? I suppose it's more a curiosity than anything else and most folk probably don't really care but I just feel that if there's an effort made to collate statistical information and give figures it should be as accurate as possible.
