Running for Office

We're all quick to point and laugh/moan at politicians, so I thought I would start a topic to see if any p+b users have run in elections.

I'm sure we're all enjoying following Ad Libs efforts and I believe we have a new councillors husband on here.

What steps does it take to represent a party in an election?

Any amusing stories of selection processes?

Let's hear your stories folks. Have you tried yourself or considered it? Would you consider it in future?

Im going to try and get on the list for 2016 but 5 minutes googling half my posts on here would probably f**k that. Maybe we are in a generation where everyone has some sort of dodgy online persona and past.

Haha. Aye I doubt I ever would, but I've been too opinionated all over social media to make it possible anyway.

Zero interest what so ever in running, I had to watch the effort my wife put in for the council election in addition to the abuse and crap she also got thrown at her and it doesn't appeal to me.

I can only imagine it can get worse as you go up to higher levels of office as well, it takes a tough skin and the willingness to become almost like public property at times.

It is all worthwhile however.

She is getting the chance to help those that have nowhere else to turn and she gets the chance to improve her community.

But anyone who thinks it is a 3 day 9-12 job is having a laugh. I know some seriously lazy councillors and I know ones that are working 7 days a week....

Oh don't get me wrong, she is enjoying it but the election process itself was a lot of effort and sometimes I am not sure people realise how stressful it can be to be put in the public eye, even at the local level. I suspect she has a taste for it however and it wouldn't surprise if she decides to run for something else in the future.

For myself, I love it! I appreciate getting invited to things as the +1 as I get all the fun and none of the hard work!

I'd like to run one day but I really can't be arsed canvassing and leafleting for other c***s campaign's to build my way up.

Is there anyway to just leapfrog that whole part of it and just becoming a Frank Underwood type guy straight away?

Wear a black hat, grow a belly and latch onto any disenfranchised group going.

My employment precludes me from standing for Public Office, so I have to be content with representing my members in the TU movement. Retirement could be as little as eight years away, though, so I'll have to shift my focus to the wider stage at some level. I can't imagine not being involved in some way.

Pretty sure Reynard stood as a Tory candidate in Ayrshire...

Stood in one of either Lochside or Dalmilling IIRC, many moons ago for council. Cannon fodder basically.

I wonder how his scheme goblin, buckled lefty c**t patter would have went down there?

As for me. Never in a million years. Would end up losing the rag at some point. Having spent a lot of time around this campaign it has been a real eye opener exactly how much is required. Basically it takes over your life. Hats off to anyone who has put themselves up for it.

Although doing a little more in the background certainly does appeal. All of a learning curve for me at the moment

You could always run as an independent. How likely you'd be to get in though, probably depends where you live I'd have thought. The Highland Council, as far as I'm aware, is one of the few councils in Scotland left where a fair chunk are independents.

Move back to Scotland and join the Scottish Senior Citizens party. I'd imagine you'll be leader within thirty years as your rivals snuff it and there will always be a call for a dedicated party that puts potted meat and inaccurate bus timetables to the top of the agenda.
