Enjoyable afternoon but as a football spectacle considerably spoiled by a strong wind that the Mo played against in the first half.

Montrose were by far the better team and deservedly went in at half time one up.

Thought they would push on playing with the wind in the 2nd half but a momentary defensive lapse changed the complexion of the game for the next 20 minutes, despite a deserved second yellow and resultant red for s reckless and needless challenge on the halfway line.

Step forward Marvellous Marvin with a thundering header and minutes later Wood with as good as strike as you'll see anywhere.

Best for Montrose were Johnston (a constant threat), Andrews (didn't miss a header all afternoon but a bit shaky with the ball at his feet) and Wood (tireless up front and that strike!).

Unfortunately for Brora no one really stood out which oerhaps part explains their ultimate downfall.

Well done Montrose!

Rather enjoyed that today, a story of two captains changing the game for better / worse (depends which side you support). Cracking weather other than the aforementioned wind which ruined it a bit, but hey, it was never going to be a silky gentlemanly match given the occasion. 20 mins in and I was thinking "there's going to be a red card here" given the ref's love affair with his yellow card. I wasn't wrong.

Montrose looked the better side throughout although with 11 v 11 they were struggling to make it count, until a blatant shove / foul on the defender in front of the lino helped set up a nice pass to smash in for the first.

Brora came out looking slightly better in the second half, quickly nodding home a tidy header (only decent chance they made from memory) but the red card almost immediately after brought everything down around them. Full defence mode obviously set in and worked fairly well with some cracking defensive blocks until Andrews stood head and shoulders above the rest, very fitting after his OG had made the difference in the first leg. Quite enjoyed the Brora midget #11 challenging Andrews in the air during the match I must add.

Confidence evidently dropped and the quick fire third goal with a cracking shot into the far top right corner from outside the box, was well worth winning any tie. Now ensures that there'll be at least one Angus Derby next season rather than four sides in four different leagues.

Hornblower chipper on way home to complete a good day out. Congratulations Mo of course, the better side won.

Eta: Have to say that the reaction I saw from most Brora fans after the game implied that they didn't really care if they won or lost. Maybe the realisation than the distance travelled this morning would be standard stuff in League 2? Great turn out and support I need to add. Glad I wasn't in the seat beside the piper though.

Originally put this in the other thread as I thought this one had been abandoned...

A scrappy game I thought, but not surprising under the circumstances. Brora looked pish. Montrose marginally better and deserved winners.

The referee was an absolute disgrace. Waving yellows about willy-nilly for f**k-all in the first half and - from my vantage point - incorrectly booking the Brora number 10 for diving when a penalty should have been given.

His sending off made a difference eventually as Brora were fucked after 70 minutes. From that point, it was a foregone conclusion.

Andrews' header was unstoppable, Wood's strike an absolute worldy.

Was happy at the end of it, despite an indifference towards both clubs. Hegarty described it as a wake-up call for all League Two teams and it's hard to argue with that.

A lack of ambition will be punished from now on. That has to be to the benefit of Scottish football as a whole.

Had settled down to pen a few words on the match from a neutral's perspective, but The Phoenix ticked all my boxes. Spot on, my man.

I have a few pics from the match here, should anyone be interested:

Brora lose to the worst Montrose side ever after an unbeaten season.

Immediate sfa match fixing enquiry and expulsion to the faroe islands league please.

They kept up appearances, so no danger of that. Montrose have dodged a bullet but I suspect this won't be their last playoff appearance and next time the opposition could be an LL club like Spartans. I don't think we will be waiting too many years to see a club get relegated.

I was thinking this too whilst leaving the game. Knowing the trap door exists and experience of getting into a situation where not scoring within 40 mins will leave you playing Highland League are two completely different things.

FWIW, I thought the yellow for the 'dive' was harsh too, although I was at the opposite corner of the ground at the time. Montrose seemed to benefit from the officials big time today imo.

Enjoyable game. Brora were pretty brutal. Mo played better footie and deserved to win. Brora would add nothing particular to the league. They didnt look that bothered to be honest
