I think you’ve got your sums wrong The 35,000,000 is roughly accurate but surely the number of people you know is greater than 1Even people living in huts in Northern Saskatchewan will surely know more than one person

Assuming half are women then that is down to 6.7 million. Excluding children - 5.6 million maybe Possibly Scottish connection, vaguely interested in football or know somebody who is, similarly likely to go to a Scottish football forum while based in Ontario, likely to get enraged that they might know a complete stranger, etc, etc. I would say about 1 in 12 chance allowing for all these factors

How would you get close enough? If you walk in a straight line towards them, the spray pattern means they would never actually hit you. Probably.

welshbairn
My knowledge of law enforcement is mainly from fiction and the telly, but is it not normally the duty of a police officer faced with superior fire power to call for back up and update them on the situation? Running alone into a large building with a hand gun hoping to shoot a guy firing an assault rifle before he shoots you and avoiding shooting panicky students running about doesn't sound like recommended police procedure. The scapegoating of this deputy is horrible, and the draft dodger President calling him a coward is disgusting. P.S. He still should have gone in. No way Trump would have done though.
MEADOWXI
A good guy with a gun always beats a bad guy with a gun.. This statement is based on extensive studying of the fact based information available in the documentary series that are Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.... Arm those teachers it can't go wrong, Unless a teacher loses it a blows away his class or an unarmed pupil loses it and is suddenly an armed and angry pupil with a weapon taken from a teacher

The only solution is to arm all law enforcement officers in the USA with flamethrowers, rocket launchers and assault weapons. This should include traffic wardens.

This is the point I made earlier about arming teachers - it would only result in them being slaughtered in the media for not protecting the kids. The debate needs to be about how to make it harder for people to carry out this kind of atrocity, not what may or may not be the correct way to respond to it. I wonder if, had the deputy called it in (which he probably did), would his superiors have ordered him to go in and engage the shooter?

When you treat the symptom and not the cause, you are forced to come up with more and more long shot ideas. What will be next after a massacre happens despite the wee lassie teaching maths carrying a 9mm pistol?
