djchapsticks
The wife and I have just tanned a tidy wee bottle of Sauv Blanc in our sun-basked garden, and all is fine with the world. Today panned out as I expected, and will perhaps be a sobering reality check for Saints fans. Other that the two wingers who worked really hard, our hosts looked very ordinary indeed. Bearing in mind that we are a part-time team there is always going to be a fitness issue, but we weathered the mini-storm following Aggie's quality strike and saw it out quite comfortably in the end. We're off to a flyer and living the dream, and that will do for now. Who would have thoughteight days ago that ourselves versus Queens would be a table-top clash !! To be fair, the only team that looked part-time today was St. Mirren. Dumbarton's work-rate, dig and endeavour was their absolute shining quality today and something for their fans to be very proud of, even if a few of your dafter posters seem to take that as an insult! Scottylintonstowel
If Gary Fleming is not in the next Scotland squad then questions must be asked. He is like a new player this season. The defence were also excellent against two nippy wingers . Routledge and Gallagher did a huge amount of work in the midfield. Just a question of whether we win the league or qualify through the playoffs. A special mention for wullie Gibson who will be a legend by the time he leaves us
optimistic
Thoroughly deserved, wee bit of sour grapes by a couple of posters, we also could have had a penalty, stand outs for me were, Fleming, taggart, Gallagher, and cawley, going to be interesting next week, top of the table clash
ulysses
Very, very poor and also a wee bit worrying. Murray better up his game quickly. Well done to Dumbarton though.
Jan Vojáček
Scott Taggart has been superb recently. His showings since he moved to right back are almost reaching Paul McGinn levels. He was superb again today. In saying that I felt Docherty dealt with McMullan very well today, he's a cracking wee player but couldn't influence play anywhere near as much as he did at Ibrox due to the hard work and reading of the game by Docherty. Everyone put in a great shift today, not one player below an 8/10 for me.

Sour grapes? C'est la vie! Let's see if the Sons get the credit for their victory in the media this week and it's not all about St Mirren's failures. I agree with your player mentions. The encouraging thing about this and last weeks' performances is that they were better than anything we saw under Ian Murray.
Tam M
Firstly, I need to credit Dumbarton as they deserved all three points. They were well organised, defended as a unit and got the ball forward quickly. It's certainly no fluke that they beat Hibs last week and then beat ourselves as well. I thought we started the game ok but it was as if we were watching us play a pre-season game, there was a real lack of urgency. We did look a bit better in the second half but again, we didn't really look capable of doing anything until Agnew scored. After that, we seemed to pick up a bit and I felt we had a chance of going on to win the game, but after the penalty it was all over. I feel sorry for Ridgers as I don't think he had much to do and didn't have much chance at both of the goals. However, we need experience within the team so I would have Langfield as the number one going forward. Goalkeepers can be very influential when it comes to organising at the back. We were all over the place at the back at times. Whilst I think that individually Kelly and Baird have the potential to be really good center backs, as a partnership it just does not work. We need some experience in there and Webster would be ideal with Kelly and Baird competing for the other place. Ideally, I'd like to see Kelly moved back to left back simply because I have absolutely no faith in Conlon at left back. I've seen him in a few games now, he seems incapable of following runs, tackling players and his distribution is dreadful - he gave the ball away too many times today, we can't continue with him as I got the impression even the players didn't want to give him the ball. I thought Naismith done well and tried to get forward as much as possible - hopefully his scan on Monday doesn't show too much damage but I reckon he will be out for a good while. Cuddihy done well when he came on but his inexperience cost us when he gave away the penalty. McMullan will be a cracking player for us this season but I feel he is more suited in a midfield of five as he is not the best when it comes to defensive duties. Morgan isn't ready I don't think, he needs to seriously bulk up, too many times he got pushed off the ball today. Carswell done ok but I feel that Goodwin would be more effective and bring much needed experience into the team. Agnew done well and showed a good few touches - I like the fact he can strike a ball and we've missed someone that can score goals from midfield for a while. However, I think the team would be far more settled with five in the midfield as we got over ran today far too many times. Apart from having a couple of nice touches at one stage in the second half, Gow contributed absolutely nothing today. He just stood about the whole game, didn't make any runs, made no attempts to win the ball in the air. He really is a wasted wage and the fact he got offered a new deal really pissed me off as the only reason I can assume he did is because he and Murray played together at Rangers. He'll no doubt get injured in training this week and be out for a few months. Maybe I'm being harsh, but signing the likes of him is why we ended up relegated last year. Gallagher done ok and made some good runs and won us a lot of set pieces, but should have done better with a few of his chances. I'm confident once he gets his first goal he'll get the confidence he needs to bang in a few going forwards. Thompson was effective when he came on and bringing him on for the last half an hour is where we will benefit from Thompson most. I respect the fact Murray is going with young boys but when you do that the young boys need to be good enough and strong enough to compete. The team also needs to have a good spine of experience to talk them through the game. Getting Webster, Langfield and Goodwin in that team has to be an absoloute must if we are to have any hope of a top four finish this season. With the players we have the best set up for me is going with a 4-5-1 that turns into more of a 4-3-3 when going forwards. This would allow Goodwin to come back into the team and give us a physical presence in the midfield, we would have Mallan and Agnew attacking, with McMullan on the right. Ideally, we need a left winger and another striker. If we stick with a 4-4-2, we are just going to be exposed and be punished for it throughout the season. I'll be at Annan on Tuesday and hopefully Murray knows where he went wrong today (although I'm concerned that he thinks we dominated the game!) and we fix it. Whilst the season has only just started, the league is going to be really tight and we can't afford to be throwing away points whilst he experiments, that's what pre-season was for. flyingscot
The encouraging thing about this and last weeks' performances is that they were better than anything we saw under Ian Murray. If that is the case you don't know how much that worries me! I didn't think that was a great performance from the Sons- solid and hard working but hardly created a chance against a team that was fucking awful! the snudge
Saints played poorly, but didn't think Dumbarton were any great shakes either. Not sure what happened with their first goal unless it was a deflection. Paddy Flannery seems to think not? If it was the player moving the ball though, then it was an excellent piece of skill. Cracking goal to get us back in it. Then missed 3-4 great chances - Gallagher's especially was a complete sitter and half decent handball penalty claim denied. Looked like if any team was going to win it, it would be Saints. But on a rare foray forward Dumbarton get the penalty and that's it, after which they very successfully killed the game. The last 10 minutes seemed to consist of Dumbarton having 5 or 6 throw ins, a few corers and making a sub. As for Saints, if we have any chance of making the playoffs we absolutely need to be winning our home games, especially against the part time teams, and therefore this cannot be seen as anything other than a terrible result. If Naismith is out for a long period - which looks likely - then a squad that already looking lightweight is looking going to struggle. So often today our tiny players were muscled off the ball. Naismith is one of the very few with a decent physique and a bit of strength. Plenty of work to do for Murray before the window closes. I wasn't there but going by the bbc stats and both club's twitter accounts, it certainly sounded very even. Playing against part time sides the game should be fairly one sided. A point would've been great but to smash and grab all 3 is delightful

I didn't think that was a great performance from the Sons- solid and hard working but hardly created a chance against a team that was fucking awful! I think the odds of us playing two promotion contenders and beating them in successive weeks, without performing extremely well, is somewhere beyond the 48/1 bookies' odds of us winning those two games. I thought Dumbarton were pretty impressive within the context of a part time team visiting play-off hopefuls. As has been said, Garry Fleming, Grant Gallagher, Wullie Gibson, Kevin Cawley and Scott Taggart were stand outs in a team who had no failures today. Dumbarton never created much, but looked good in possession and defended well. Saints were very disappointing, but still looked the more likely to go on and win after we got it back to 1-1. As you say, it SHOULD have been one sided in our favour, but it certainly wasn't.
Silvio
Dumbarton had two shots on goal and scored with both. A deflected free kick and a penalty. Fair play to them. I think I'll get over it.
Steven Craig
Good win for Dumbarton today, they battled well. But the service to Steven Craig was poor. He made some good runs and there was no service whatsoever. The vision displayed by the Dumbarton central midfielders was also poor. On too many occasions there were good opportunities to get the ball out wide and then get crosses in, but they were happy to dither on the ball giving the St Mirren players time to get back in position. Dumbarton offered little in the final third, but St Mirren were no better. A poor game in truth.

Frank Quitely
If that is the case you don't know how much that worries me! I didn't think that was a great performance from the Sons- solid and hard working but hardly created a chance against a team that was fucking awful! You should be worried. When Saints appointed Ian Murray most Sons fans, other than the ultra-loyalists, accepted that the move was probably in the interest of both clubs as to quote the man himself, 'it had all become a bit stale'. We moved quickly to install the new management team and already we're noting a quantum difference. Whilst you may not have been impressed with Dumbarton today, and the result notwithstanding we do have much room for improvement, this was only the fourth 'counting' fixture of this season for a squad built from four re-signed players and a host of new guys; in these games we've beaten Morton and yourselves away, and turned over Hibs at home. No' bad for a work in progress.... I genuinely have no axe to grind with Ian Murray, but you may have appointed a guy whose ambition exceeds his managerial ability.
