The James McClean Sponsored Poppy Thread

Recommended Posts

No surprise to see him. He's been raging about football ever since all the teams came up on his accumulator, but they wouldn't let him claim it because he burnt his coupon.

And it's off to hell I go [emoji23][emoji23]

Just realised that Caley are at Parkhead on Saturday.  Will we get treated to the now annual ritual of booing of the minutes silence?

Why would there a be a minute's silence on Saturday anyway?

Quick question.

The soldiers who were shot by other British soldiers for being too shell shocked to "go over the top" and run into machine gun fire.

We wearing poppies for them?

I would imagine so , if you choose to wear one for that particular reason

not sure what point you are getting at here . The world was a completely different place 100 years ago . We all know that ,some dreadfull things happened and were treated as the norm . not sure what sort of point scoring you are trying to achieve here

Your imagination may be correct I was looking for further data to clarify this that but didn't find any so I posted what I had

If anybody else wants to dig deeper then feel free

Their isn't really a timescale on promotion, Certain trades will promote when you finish your training, infantry regiments you're usually looking at 5-8 years, other corps around 4-5 if you're alright. Can be quicker, can be longer.

In the jobs where you get promoted quicker it's usually because you've got a trade with transferable skills to civilian life that would pay more.

And complete arseholes. There's a lot of shite things about Arbroath but pished Marines going about on the weekends is by far the worst. Fucking can't stand them.

Most I've met have been great company on the drink tbh.

No that's not what I have said at all , the way shell shocked soldiers were treated at the time was dreadfull as was the way many with mental illness at that time in society were aswell . Just be grateful that attitudes and society has changed

Saying that this was "normal" 100 years ago absolutely puts the boot into these guys who were shot for cowardice when in fact they were suffering what we would now call PTSD.

Nothing about it was normal.

romeo you are itching for an arguement so much that you are failing to see I am in agreement with you . What happened to these men was shocking , but 100 years ago the attitudes to mental health where light years from where we are now, surely you can't disagree with that , all I am saying is that what we consider a backwards solution to mental health issues was considered "normal" by society at that time and not just in war scenarios ,  . Those men also deserve rememberance too , I completely agree with you in that respect

Ive never met a poor squaddie. My cousin is in the army and works in recruitment in a city centre in England, has a mon-fri job, digs paid, travelling expenses from his private flat (paid) to work and back home every week. Access to GP/Dentist/Physio/Specialist medical treatment, get paid to go on adventure holidays and all the rest. Lets not beat around the bush they are pretty well rewarded in the army, yes its a dangerous job, but the fallacy of this 'low basic wage' is exactly that with all the various allowances and benefit in kind (with the free digs, food and travel benefits/allowances) their real value wage is considerably higher. I am absolutely not saying they dont deserve these things but lets not sit there and suggest these guys are hard done to.

Free digs? Aye for themselves when they're away. You think their landlords and banks only charge them for their houses back here when they stay in them?
Adventure holidays? To Basra and Kabul to get blown up? They put their lives on the line every day in duty- that in my opinion deserves respect. Yet you don't hear them bleat on about the danger of their jobs like some other public servants I can think of (who incidentally are vastly overpaid)

Aye £14.7K starting salary for a soldier, then £18.3K on full completion of training.
Yep, that's a 'considerable' pay packet, they must be f*ckin living it up on a yacht in the Med for most of the summer!
They're miles under the average U.K. Annual income at present.

Maybe they should have stuck in at school

My bank still wanted the Mortgage paid when I was away at a 3 day training course.
