Monkey Tennis
Aye he might get a game for a team in the top half of the championship now. He certainly wont be gracing the field for any of the top english clubs like the likes of dalgleish , jordan , archibald etc did in years gone by. I wonder if we'll ever produce another striker able to challenge at the top of the english premiership scoring charts. Strong as such players were, especially Dalglish, you have to remember that top English clubs did not, back then pull in the best players from all across the globe. With very, very few exceptions like Ardiles and Villa at Spurs, they got their players from the British Isles. It's therefore not as simple as lamenting the fact that we no longer have as many players operating at that level. Obviously, there has been a deterioration in our capacity to produce top players. It's also true though that even if that hadn't happened, we'd still have far fewer big stars in the English game than was once the case.
Bigbrbairn
Think that forwards just need to be a bit sharper like Reg Varney of Leicester. He has a desire to play top level and does not want to go back on the buses

They didnt need to back then as they were regularly winning european trophies without bringing foreign players in. The scottish players playing for the likes of liverpool and forest were as good as anyone in europe.

The likes of Forest and Liverpool were obviously good sides, but they were up against teams who also drew their players chiefly from their own countries. A straight comparison of how many players we had operating at that level then with now, is pretty brainless if it fails to acknowledge how the game for big clubs in England and elsewhere, has changed utterly in the last two or three decades.
