paranoid android
Strange one. Pal of mine is receiving some pretty horrible emails on a regular basis - open-ended encryption, so she can't respond to them, and there's no way of telling who they're from - or is there? Is it there anything she can do about this? Is it even worth reporting?

paranoid android
Pretty much f**k all you can do. Is it something that only one person knows about or is it general abuse that could be from a complete stranger? Hard to say, mate - I've only seen one or two of them - must be quite upsetting to get them.
P45
You could maybe check the email headers. Paste that shit into a IP trace website. Go round the person's hoose and go feral on the c**t.
paranoid android
Yeh it's not true what they say about sticks and stones and words. Is it possible for your friend to just get a new email address? I think that will have to be the answer. Ideally, we'd like to find out who it is, and kick their c**t in. lichtgilphead
You could maybe check the email headers. Paste that shit into a IP trace website. In addition, you could copy the emails (including the headers) to abuse@xxx where "xxx" equals the bit after the @ sign, and ask them to block the account. For example, you would complain to abuse@btinternet.com or abuse@yahoo.co.uk or abuse@hotmail.com as appropriate This wouldn't stop it immediately, as the abuser could register another account, but they would pretty soon get tired of opening a new account every day. BFTD
Keep a copy of everything in the event that the cowardly crackpot escalates, but the best advice for your pal is to start growing a thick skin. The world's full of tragic losers who get a kick out of anonymous trolling, so it's a more important life skill than ever now. There are a ton of sites on the web that offer free anonymous email without signing up, and advertise themselves as not keeping identifiable information about their users, so the only way she'll find out who it is will be if they're total fucking amateurs or if they reveal themselves. Either way, who gives a f**k. Let them stew in their misery while she carries on regardless.

BFTD
I'd somehow forgotten about that Bomber Brown fiasco The Shaw quote in the final post on that thread is pretty apt here. Never wrestle a pig; you both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Is it something that only one person knows about or is it general abuse that could be from a complete stranger? that sounds like a reply from someone who's organisation doesnt want the hassle of investigating a complaint. Without knowing the content of the emails I can't fully comment but if it's of a threatening nature doesn't it breach some communications law or other and the polis are obliged to investigate? Serious question btw. I don't know the answer.

Jambomo
I suppose it depends on how serious the e-mails are, i.e nasty and unpleasant or full-on threatening. Also are they personal, as though it's someone she knows or just random stuff that anyone might have sent to anyone else? Either way she should keep hold of them and if it escalates or if the frequency increases then I'd mention it to the police. I don't know how much they can trace but there might be some thing they can look at.
