Can't help but feel that much of this is down to the 'Ruth Davidson Effect'.

Although I'm anti-Tory, I'm quite impressed by her more honest / realistic 'strong opposition' campaign rather than the usual approach which has folk thinking "they'll never win a Scottish election, why bother waste a vote on them?".

It was clear to everyone that the SNP was going to win this election with Labour and / or Tories as opposition, and the soft voiced, whingey Kezia just comes across as completely ineffective, whilst Davidson looks and sounds like she could take anyone on. Shame about her policy, but she comes across as a rather good leader and I can see why she'd appeal to the thousands who vote for personality first / policies second.

Instead, (and to steal a fine analogy from another thread) Kez was like the band on the Titanic, carrying on as usual, ignoring the absolute disaster all around her, and inevitably sunk.

Dugdale forgot she was in a battle with the Tories as well. Far too obsessed with the SNP for her own good. Should have attacked the Tories on their policies instead of try to slip an envelope between them and the SNP

If you want to get into it the thing that has cost the SNP an overall majority is the Farm Subsidy failures. The rural votes in Aberdeenshire, Highlands and the South have went to the Tories in a large enough quantity to cost them seats on the list, probably Aberdeenshire West as well.

Farm subsidies! Landowner farmers are the biggest Tories out there. They shout steel industry can't support itself, shut it down. Same with coal, Scottish motor manufacturing etc. But farmers must have their subsidy. Oh and the the banks. The banks must be supported that's where they keep all their money while they spend their subsidies.

And some Nationalists on here are happy these selfish b*****ds have moved into 2nd place.

That's a really important point. Davidson has deliberately distanced herself from Cameron and the Tory cuts; Dugdale should have been holding her to account on this at every opportunity.

Think in policy terms that's easier for the SNP than hooking up with the Greens, so he may be right.
