What did he say?

Nothing of note.  He was questioning why Scottish clubs only seem to send players on loan to other Scottish clubs (having just done so himself a day previous) and saying that he would like his young players to get game time alongside people 'who have a mortgage to pay' rather than hang about Murray Park.

MARK WARBURTON last night labelled Scottish football’s loan system as broken and not fit for purpose.

The Rangers boss believes youngsters must move further afield to test themselves at a level which allows them to return better players.

A host of Gers kids are already on short-term moves to lower league clubs in this country with Tom Walsh this week signing on at St Mirren.

But Warburton wants his best young talent to think outside the box by moving down south rather than wasting their time with local loan deals or under-20 football.

He said: “Players going out on appropriate loans, loans that challenge them, brings them on and really develops them as a player then we’ve got something but right now the loans are not working.

“It’s a blunt conversation, in the nicest possible way. You turn round and say are you better than Andy Halliday, Jason Holt, Niko Kranjcar, Jordan Rossiter, Harry Forrester.

“That’s it, if you’re not there is no point being the 20th man every week and travel with the squad. They won’t develop as players, so they have got to go out and play and we’ve got to encourage them.

“The Under-20 league won’t suit them, they won’t benefit from the Under-20 league, there’s nothing to be gained by that at all. So go out and play competitive football where the guy alongside you needs to pay his mortgage.

“That’s what they need to do and experience what it’s like to lose three points on Saturday.

“If we can get the boys doing that, all the loans will be until Christmas and then we can review each individual loan and go from there.

“It’s the same as down south where you have some fantastic technical matches but I think it’s still a million miles away from the first team.

“That’s what I honestly believe, it’s nothing like the first team.

“How many Scottish players go to English clubs on loan? So straight away they say send them out on loan, there’s St Mirren or this but why aren’t we saying Peterborough or so and so. We don’t, we just naturally accept it’s somewhere local.

“I get told Scottish boys don’t travel well.

There’s no favours. If we want boys to go and play they’ve got to be good enough to go and play.

“I think there is a long held mentality that we just send them local. They are local lads, so they can come back, it’s not too far to drive. It’s nonsense.

“Look at Gedion Zelalem. He’s 18 years-old and came over from Germany to the States, from the US to London with Arsenal and played in the Champions League and then goes on loan to Rangers. He’s 18.

“That’s the difference, where are our 18-years-old doing that?”

On the day that Rangers confirmed 20-year-old midfielder Tom Walsh is moving to St Mirren on loan, Warburton insisted young Rangers players won’t be allowed to loiter without intent at their Milingavie base.

He said: “Tom’s away to St Mirren. Those boys have got to go out and play.

“They can sit here and enjoy Murray Park, say they are at Rangers every day and enjoy the canteen and gym, it’s a fantastic place to be.

“But they have got to play football.

“So Tom Walsh, Jordan Thompson, Ryan Hardie, Liam Kelly has gone out, they’ve got to go and learn the game. All the players have done it and they’ll be the same.”

Just yer standard bi-daily rant about how everything in Scottish football is shite by an absolute thundercunt of a man.

I'm asking this question from the perspective of a Dundee-based fan who doesn't get to see too many games and doesn't get the Ayrshire post.

Now we have Moore secured, how close are we to a strong team that can compete to stay in this league?

Moores situation is a strange one, to offer him a contract because they would lose money on him would suggest a years wages for him was less than his market value and then to send him out on loan for that year when he is 20 rather than have him fight for his place at his parent club.

Ayr will no doubt be picking up a chunk of his wage but it seems strange to me why they wouldn't have just free'd him in the summer

A lot of talk about what we still need - McCall still after "3 or 4" players but not mentioned by him, or anyone, I think we actually need another Jamie Adams.

Another two centre backs, two wingers and at least a striker. You seem stacked in centre mid.

Craig Moore is a solid signing but his injury record is poor, what did he eventually notch last season? At present it still doesn't seem you've significantly strengthened the squad from last season which is really what you needed. Can only presume McCall is holding out for the loan market.
