Football documentary

A lot of it isn't really about football, but The Other Final is a documentary by a Dutch filmmaker who was inspired to make a story about the two worst football teams in the UEFA rankings (after The Netherlands failed to make the 2002 World Cup). Basically, he arranges for the Montserrat team to fly to Bhutan for a game of football. Can't even remember who wins but a dog runs onto the pitch at some point. Then everyone gathers round a tiny telly after the match to watch the real World Cup Final on a tiny telly. Heartwarming stuff.

Next Goal Wins is brilliant. It's a documentary about the American Samoan national team's attempt to qualify for the world cup.

I'd vouch for it too - one of the best sport documentaries I've ever seen. I defy anyone not to let out a "Yaaassss" when they finally win a game. Some engaging characters in it too you can't help but root for like Nicky Salapu, the keeper who let in 31 goals against Australia and Jaiyah Saelua, who's the world's first transgender international footballer.

You'll struggle to find a better sports documentary than next goal wins. In fact it's up there with the best documentaries I've ever watched and I've watched my fair share. The BT sport one on the Crazy Gang of Wimbledon was decent enough. I actually think that's on YouTube as well.

Not really much point in watching it now.

They didn't make the last world cup finals, so I'd hope that wasn't too much of a spoiler. :)

Alternatively. you could always just treat it as an hour and a half of sjc-esque confusion over Jaiyah...she's their centre half btw.

Remember watching a documentary years ago with Ron Atkinson going into Peterborough and that was decent. Got to see what happens behind the scenes when a club is falling apart

Was that the one where they brought him in as Director of Football without telling the existing manager, so the existing guy essentially wouldn't talk to him? That one was a bit painful to watch.

Has anyone tracked down a copy of that doc about Sven Goran-Eriksson's success with Gothenburg? I wanted to see it when it was getting good reviews, but it never seemed to get a release here, and I'd forgotten all about it until this thread. IIRC, it was supposed to be contrasting the football team with Swedish politics of the time, or something.

There was a good one about the North Korean team at the 1966 World Cup. Also something like "Football and Fascism" about how Mussolini, and to a lesser extent Hitler, used football to further their agenda. If you like a bit of politics with your football, that was well worth watching.

Also recommend Next Goal Wins, as does everyone else.

And the Barnstoneworth episode of Ripping Yarns. Okay, not technically a documentary...

Where did you guys see the four year plan documentary? Can't find it on YouTube.

I watched it at the time on tv. Your best bet would probably be to buy it off amazon. I remember trying to find it a wee while back to watch it again and it was a nightmare to try and find.

"I Believe in Miracles" about the rise of Notts Forest under Brian Clough. Tremendous viewing, if only for the madman that is Kenny Burns.

Might still be kicking about the demand service if you have BT Sport.
