Forfar Athletic v Dumbarton

Hi friends, I've decided to bite the bullet and just start a thread for this one because, to be brutally honest, I'm quite looking forward to competitive football returning with a cracking away day.

Given that we don't really have a depth in our squad to speak of we can't change much, but Stevie appears hopeful of adding one player to the squad before this. So I'd imagine we'll go with something like this, a 4-3-3 in possession and a 4-5-1 when defending.

Jamie Ewings

Craig Pettigrew Gregor Buchanan Frazer Wright Mark Docherty

Garry Fleming Ryan Stevenson Grant Gallagher

David Smith Robertar Berbathom Andy Stirling

We're notoriously dreadful away from home, in fact we haven't won away since December the 5th where we beat Alloa 2-0, so combining that with our woeful cup record and the fact we have about 14 senior players I'll go with a routine 2-0 Forfar victory.

Not really sure what to expect from us. Can't think that we've played our best 11 as yet in any friendly.

I'd go for 4-3-3 with TOB holding DM.

Adam

Bain

Kennedy

Munro

Malcolm

O'Brien

Swankie

Milne

Cox

Lister

Denholm

Some decent players in that Dumbarton team but if we get off to a good start could beat them.

We really should be beating a team with Jamie Bain and Stuart Malcolm in defence but if our away form/league cup form hasn't improved we'll end up with bridie on our face.

Our team picks itself really, unless we sign anyone before the weekend. Fraser Wright vs Jimmy Lister is a battle and a half.

Frazer Wright against Jim Lister is what I'd imagine it must have been like to watch football in the 70s.

I think Denholm is suspended due to his red card v Hearts last season.  Also Kennedy and TOB have both sat out the last couple of games while at the same time, we've had a space on the bench - not sure if either are 100% fit, if that's the case.
If Kennedy's out, I think Bain may continue to deputise at LB where he's looked pretty decent and one of the youngsters - either Yates, MacKintosh or Mailer will be in at RB.
If TOB is out, could be Foxy going in as a straight replacement.
Kerr Hay may also have a 1 match suspension hanging over him from the tail end of the season too. So, Cox may drop to midfield to cover Danny's absence and Aitken/Moore (if signed) may go in up top.

From the pre-season games I've seen, I'd say Milne is the pick of the bunch with Cox and Bain not far behind.  Adam has looked solid until last night.  Munro and Moore also had their poorest games last night.
Milne being the pick gives us a problem for 4-4-2 - if Malcs and Munro are the preferred 2 at the back, TOB must play central mid along with Milne - that means pushing Swanks out wide or up front, neither of which appeals (to me).  Danny gives more cover for the defence and pace in attack.  Cox also has the ability to work harder in the game in both those positions.

That being the case, I'll go wtih your 4-3-3 approach.

GK Adam

RB Bain / MacKintosh
CB Munro
CB Malcs
LB Kennedy (if fit) / Bain

C/RM Milne
CM TOB (if fit) / Foxy
C/LM Swanks

RF Aitken
CF Lister
LF Cox

Hoping that me and the boy can get down for this one.

Looking forward to seeing the new faces and seeing how we perform.

You must be the only guy delighted to see us in the Northern section!

Nope.

I take it from that he didn't endear himself to your support either.

he was pretty decent, I'd have him back this season over Jordan Moore. He scored 4 goals in 8 games for us.

f**k sake Moore really isn't going down well in Emmerdale

Was decent when he was fit and playing in this league for QP for what it's worth

Mixed probably. Scored a few crackers- solo effort away at Cowdenbeath in a 4-1 win and a great lob against Ayr(I think) at home in another good win. But...missed a few sitters in the crucial run in and not the hustle and bustle type striker that the fans warm to. (Andy Ryan type)

Interesting. I was one of his fans during his time with us, but even I ran out of patience with him in the end. He put in one fantastic performance as a sub against Hibs, scored his first goal for the club, and was then horrific from then onwards.

I had high hopes, and he was clever at times, using his body to win cheap fouls but he contributed very little and as you say he's certainly not up for the hustle and bustle. He spent a lot of time walking about, or stood still or just moaning.

I think you could be right there S08. Had my fingers crossed for an away tie with Peterhead too as that is about as close as I get to a "home" tie.

That will be a cracking duel...worth admission money alone.
