Dunning1874 Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 BBC News showing live footage of what appears to be shots fired at a group of civilians approaching one of the bridges in Istanbul.
vikingTON Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 A fairly crap civilian effort to protest the military roadblock warded off with gunfire. I, for one, wouldn't have my phone out trying to Periscope or connect to Twitter in that situation, this is an actual, serious military intervention,
Bully Wee Villa Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Would it likely all calm down if the President resigns? Has he got Shah-like levels of unpopularity?
williemillersmoustache Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 So... are the military the goodies or the baddies? They're the referee/remote desktop

welshbairn Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Just to say having just found out about this due to being a bit busy, P and B is better than Reuters for getting up to date on world events.
Meth Damon Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 If it carries on like it is then big fat quiz of the year is gonna have to be 3 days long to fit everything in
HTG Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Seeing the back of Erdogan would be no bad thing. Hopefully with minimal damage and the country can get back to a more moderate leadership. We've seen enough damage from leaving a vacuum though so this could get messy. When I went to Turkey 5 years ago I could get a bet on the fitba nae bother. 2 years later and bet 365 was blocked. That's no progress so hopefully that's one of the first things the soldiers will put right for their people (and me next time I go).
Dunning1874 Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 According to RT (always a significant disclaimer) Erdogan supporters have seized a tank in Ankara.
invergowrie arab Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Just been for a kebab. The Kurdish lads in the istanbulie in Dundee seem happy enough.
vikingTON Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 The fact that Erdogan was away in some bin, trying to hold onto power by Facetime shows that whoever is running the show kens their stuff as to how to run a proper coup. Textbook stuff so far, but it could well lose some steam later.
Dunning1874 Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 They're now saying 'armoured vehicle' rather than tank but still, IT'S FACKING KICKING OFF

The_Craig Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 They're now saying 'armoured vehicle' rather than tank but still, IT'S FACKING KICKING OFF Seen a video on periscope of some dafty battering what looked like a tank with a traffic cone.

May have referred to that incident, or been something else. Journalists will refer to near enough any armoured vehicle as a "tank" though.
vikingTON Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 This 'academic' clown on BBC keeps rambling on about refugees as if that has anything to do with this coup. The military are running the coup, not Turkish petit-bourgeois raging about Syrians entering the country. It has nothing to do with Turkey's undoubted struggle to cope with refugees from the Middle East - this is a variant of the Turkish military v Turkish democracy struggle. And the reason why millions of Syrians fled civil war in Syria and moved to Turkey is that Turkey kept loose borders, allowing Islamist terrorists into the region and everyone else to get out owing to the scumbags that Erdogan let in.
Ya Bezzer! Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I'm sure it's a massive coincidence that Kerry is in Moscow right now. Both the US and Russia wanted rid of him. The US seems to be really cementing its relations with the Kurds and I'm sure the Russians have been out to get him since the shoot down incident. Add in that Erdogan binned a bunch of generals recently and replaced them with 'like-minded individuals' and what's happening now shouldn't really surprise anyone.

You plan your coups based by what is happening with who has guns or influence near you, not when some foreign nob meets another. They picked when Erdogan was on holiday.
