Crazy's Lovechild
Looking for opinions or suggestions as to why so many teams are struggling to put a squad/team together for the forthcoming season. KSC Wolves have folded, heard today that Dalmilling have folded, Ardeer West Recreation and New Cumnock Afton struggling to attract players despite going up a division and utterings of others not doing so well either. What is it down to? Expenses to keep clubs running? People losing interest in the amateur game? Is it that people dont want to train and would rather play Sunday's? Is it a social issue and lads just want to sit in a pub on a Saturday? Whats your opinions on the matter

CD 1972
It's a different generation who look at football differently from the rest of us. I'm 35 and can safely say the way I viewed football is different from the way most players view it nowadays. Football clubs are social clubs now, not football clubs. A place where boys can meet there pals and do something in common interest. If there pals don't fancy it anymore or get bored then lads will go with their pals in whatever their gonna do. In the premier for example the challenge facing normal amateur teams each season is growing year on year to even make a decent season of it due to other influences that regularly gets airtime on this site so I see that as a factor also, not THE factor but it does play a part. Also lads have young families and the need for work and making money is greater now than ever and I'm sorry to say football is just a hobby for most and takes a back seat unless lads have time to spare. I can speak from personal experience if u don't have a carrot to dangle to entice lads to ur club then ur struggling. The days of the name of the club being enough to get lads in are long long gone. Good luck to everyone.
AyrshireBeanCoonter
I agree. I have noticed over the past couple of years that it's been harder to get players in. There isn't enough young players coming through.

Were struggling this season got 15 signed so far hopefully get some more in
Gthedon
I have a theory. I think the lack of youth teams is harming the next generations of footballers along with the points raised earlier. Competition for places in the youth systems are the norm with waiting lists to boot. I can't recall the situation being this bad.Yes - it will help that one player decent into pro youth but its killing the game for many others. This can turn a kids head away from football before we've even kicked a ball. I also think the system of pro youth for those fortunate enough to have the talent is doing more harm than good in not educating and filling kids heads with delusion. When they finally leave the youth system the appeal is for 'junior' and gone are the days when you would play for your local side before making the step up. The ones that don't have the junior ability are hunted far and wide by many a club who don't utilise them or give them an opportunity. This is the club's on failing. The club's entice the same pool of players, usually pals, and go after the usual players for one or two additions.Football in a decade will have an area feel with less players taking up the game clubs will reduce in numbers and those surviving will have players from a few postcodes within a region. The SAFA and SFA need to assist if they want to get more players playing the game. There is an extremely healthy budget out there to be spent. Don't ask me how to spend it though but maybe have local reps organising sessions for kids to get into the sport without parent pressure just a little kick about at the park would be a great start. Involve them!!Simple things like extending the games a trialist can play and when players can be signed will also help. Also, releasing a player should be simplified to allow players not to be held at random by clubs.I'm as frustrated at the mentality of this generation as the next guy but we need to educate and involve the following generation or even more players will walk away to other interests or sports. Cheggers84
In my experience junior clubs are not helping the situation when they could easily come to an agreement with local amateur teams. We have had 3 instances where junior teams come sniffing about young players, players whom anyone with a brain would tell you have the ability but need at least a couple of seasons in the amateur ranks for experience. So those said players leave the amateur team that they probably played every week for, just to have the label amongst their pals that they play junior football and what happens is they sit on the bench of junior sides and are wasted then become disillusioned and lose interest. NCA
We're the same there's a junior team just down road from us they have already taken 3 of our players and still sniffing about a couple more it doesn't help when ur trying to get a team together then they come in and swoop players away .. The Bfg
Hearing ardeers struggles have came late and caused a bit of surprise. They had planned on losing one player from last years squad and had a replacement lined up. Since then a number of boys have jumped ship which prompted other boys to follow suit. Problem they face now is most boys have already been snapped up by other clubs so the talent pool in the area is thinning. There a well run club but so I'm sure there doing all they can to replace the boys that's left and kick on from a successful season last year. Dickson10
There's a lot more guys working shifts n weekends than there ever was wen a started playing fitba and Fitba seems to have missed a generation and all the commited good honest players are at the ages of 30-40 n some have chucked it or moved on without there being enough young boys interested or even good enough to take there place so think the trend of teams struggling will continue for the next 5 or 6 year till the next bunch of boys come through from boys football. A look at places like muirkirk Logan Cumnock new Cumnock auchinleck Catrine mauchline drongan n they all had decent amateur sides with a good squad of players n plenty of commitee now they're all struggling in one way or another, even the local junior sides have been struggling in recent years, Av no idea of the solution but a personally think it will get worse before it gets better n we will see more amateur teams folding

The competition for players down that way is massive especially when you have so many amateur clubs within spitting distance. West Kilbride, Kilbride Thistle, Ardrossan Castle Rovers, Ardeer, Moorpark Thistle and the Dirrans all within 5-10 miles of each other
heeders
Agree wae dickson the days of most boys working mon-fri is by, more boys working shifts etc personally the reason i stopped, training midweek then straight to s nyt shift soaking and freezing isnt nice or nyt shift fri play sat then straight back to work pretty much is horrible especially wae young kids, sadly i can only see more teams folding one team left in ayr says it all
